Frigid shooting dooms Lady Chucks against Lady Owls

January 19, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The outside temperature was higher than the inside home shooting percentage to begin Friday night’s girls' basketball game.
Punxsy’s frigid shooting of four of 22 tries in the first half doomed the squad against defending District IX champion Bradford, 52-36, in Punxsutawney.

The two district foes combined to miss the game’s first 13 attempts from the floor but it was the Lady Chucks who did not score until 5:48 into the affair.

Leading 9-4 after a period, Bradford (13-1/4-0 D-IX) took advantage of the continued cold Punxsy shooting in the second stanza.

Owls outlast Chucks in double overtime

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a tightly-contested and emotional affair, the first rematch of last year’s District IX championship went to the home team after an extra two periods of play.

Bradford’s Mike Wilber kissed a 25-foot shot high off the backboard as time expired before the home team took advantage of bad Punxsy shot selection in double overtime for a 57-49 victory.

“It was a very, very tough loss tonight,” a drained Dirk Neal, Punxsy’s head coach said. “This was a very emotionally draining effort.”
