CLARION — The road is never an easy place to play, especially when an undefeated foe is your host.
The task will be daunting for the Punxsy Chucks tonight when they face the 7-0 Clarion Bobcats at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.
The visiting Chucks, though, are hoping the trend of the short four-year football series between still fairly new Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference opponents continues to hold true. Over the past four years, the visiting team has come out on top, including the Bobcats’ 19-7 victory in Punxsy last fall.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — On normal rest, some foes are a tall task, but on the second of back-to-back days makes them all the tougher.
This was the case for the second time this season for the Punxsy boys' soccer team when facing rival DuBois. After shutting out Karns City last night, Punxsy did not have enough left to face DuBois 20 hours later in a 4-1 home loss on Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
"It was a good hard game. We needed it and to have good competition at the end of the season," said Chucks coach Phil Shenkle.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When a team cannot put many shots on goal, it is tough to win. The Punxsy boys' soccer defenders were very successful at keeping visiting Karns City to six shots to record a 2-0 shutout on Senior Night at Jack F. LaMarca Stadium.
"That was District-IX caliber defense on the field all night," proclaimed Chucks coach Phil Shenkle to his players after the game.
BROOKVILLE — In the next-to-last tuneup for the District IX championship, Punxsy was able to easily handle Brookville, 16-47, in boys' cross country on Tuesday afternoon in Brookville.
"It is not an easy course with a hill for the final mile," explained Chucks coach John Smith. "Our first four had good times."
Punxsy completed its dual meet schedule a perfect 9-0 with the defeat of Brookville.

PUNXSUTAWNEY – With a cold wind blowing across the stadium, St. Marys lifted a ball over the outstretched hands of Punxsy girls' soccer goalie Allie Fye for what would be the game-winning goal, 3-2, with 15:05 left in the match.
"It just wasn't our game," said Lady Chucks' coach Kevin Hughes.
Sydney Dubensky provided a goal in each half to provide all the Lady Chucks' offense on the afternoon.
Dubensky netted the game's first score of the match. The Lady Dutch tied the contest, 1-1, in the 30th minute for the other goal of the opening half.
CLEARFIELD — After facing each other in both the District IX singles and doubles championships, local rivals Punxsy and DuBois met on the girls' team tennis court on Monday afternoon in Clearfield. The result ended up the same as the two regular season meetings as DuBois' depth was too much for Punxsy, giving it a 5-0 district team title.
"The girls played well tonight," commented Punxsy coach Rose Graffius. "There were some close games. It was a good ending to a great season."

DUBOIS — Brookville's winning streak (five games) was finally snapped when the powerhouse DuBois Beavers football team proved to be too much for the Raiders to handle in a 52-13 defeat Friday night.
With the loss, Brookville's record now sits at 5-2.
"There are always positives you will get from games like this... obviously, when you lose that bad there aren't as many as there should be, but they're definitely some positives, and the guys said some good things after the game," said Chris Dworek, Raider varsity football coach.

ST. MARYS – The distant future of the Punxsy girls' basketball program looks to be promising. Last weekend, the sixth-grade Punxsy/SS.C.D. squad kept its perfect season mark by sweeping three games with a 27-17 victory over Johnsonburg in the championship contest to win the Elk County Catholic Tournament in St. Marys.
Kate Horner led the team which is now 15-0 on the season with 14 points. Cassidy Reed hit for five points, while Emily Griebel and Kylee Shoemaker both added four points apiece.
KARNS CITY — In a close game, turnovers can prove to be very costly, and the Chucks learned just how true that fact is on Friday night. Punxsy committed its third turnover of the second half, and Karns City turned it into a Zach Moore 32-yard game-winning field goal with 49 seconds left in the game to give Karns City the 17-14 win in Karns City.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After posting its third-straight victory last Friday, the Punxsy Chucks squad will look to pass another road test against the traditionally tough Karns City Gremlins.
“Karns City is a fantastic program,” points out Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol. “They have won a good amount of the District IX AA championships and are a solid program.”
The two Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference Large School Division co-leaders have produced very similar 2012 results to this point of the season. Both squads have 2-0 marks in the KSAC Large School Division and have 4-2 overall records.
