Chucks hold on in slugfest vs. Dutch

January 18, 2012

ST. MARYS — The Punxsy Chucks rode a five-game winning streak into St. Marys for a District-IX league game against the Flying Dutchmen, and in what Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal called a "flat out war," the Chucks headed home with six in a row with a 44-38 win.

"It was a blood bath," Neal said. "We had two starters foul out in Garrett Zimmerman and Alex Fedigan early in the fourth quarter."

Punxsy's sharp-shooting sophomore Brandon Mancuso also missed the game due to illness, but Neal said his squad stepped up and did what they had to do to earn the victory.

A RARE DAY OFF FOR THESE GIRLS

January 17, 2012

Although the winter sports schedule isn't quite as hectic as the fall sports season, a night with no events — such as Monday night — is still a rarity. Faithfully attending all home events, and some on the road, Punxsy's cheerleaders rarely see a day off. This season's middle school cheerleaders are (front, from left) Kassi Niver, Kylee Knox, Hailyn Fye, Emily Travis; (middle) Laura Keller, Brianna Roy, Jalynn Mineweaser, Savannah Wolfe, Libby Anderson; (back) Tabitha Windsor and Sarah Malberg.

Raiders ace big test against Johnsonburg

January 17, 2012

BROOKVILLE — Heading into Monday night's game, the Brookville Raiders knew they were facing one of the district's best basketball squads in the Johnsonburg Rams.

But the Raiders prevailed, putting up 11 points in overtime and holding the Rams to just four to earn the 64-55 victory.

"I thought it was a pretty fierce game, physical underneath, and you had two teams out there that didn't want to lose," Brookville head coach Bud Baughman said. "Fortunately, we had a few lucky breaks for us; that was the difference in the game."

Pitcher Barrett heading to California Winter League

January 16, 2012

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Many children grow up playing baseball and dream of someday playing in the major leagues.

Brookville's Ryan Barrett is one step closer to achieving that dream, as he was selected recently to play in the California Winter League (CWL), a prestigious instructional league from which many players are selected to play professionally.

"I'm hoping to get picked up by a team," Barrett said before leaving for Palm Springs, Calif., today. "It's my dream to play professional baseball; that's what I've been working for my entire life."

Lady Tigers pounce on Lady Chucks early

January 14, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks basketball team knew it had its hands full when the Lady Tigers of Hollidaysburg — defending District VI champion and perennial powerhouse — rolled into town on snow-covered roads Friday night.

Punxsy (3-9, 0-2) wasn't able to break the Lady Tigers' press, and Hollidaysburg scored eight points in the first minute and opened with a 13-0 run on its way to a 78-32 win.

Back to .500 — Punxsy takes down Ridgway

January 14, 2012

RIDGWAY — After a tough loss to Brookville put the Punxsy junior high wresting team below the .500 mark for the season at 2-3, Punxsy rebounded with a victory Thursday night in Ridgway to return to .500.

As has been the case for Punxsy in more matches than not this season, it dominated the bouts that took place on the mat. But in an interesting move, Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said Ridgway opted to exchange several forfeits as opposed to allowing its wrestlers to take to the mat during regulation.

Janocha's 13 & 10 give Punxsy fifth straight

January 13, 2012

WESTOVER — After the Harmony Owls missed a buzzer-beating shot that would have given them a win over the Punxsy boys' basketball team last season, Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal pegged Harmony — a much smaller school in Westover — a scrappy school that will play a team hard until the end. And Thursday night in Westover, the Owls gave the Chucks a run for their money, especially in the first half.

Lady Crusaders stump Punxsy, still undefeated

January 12, 2012

ST. MARYS — Entering Wednesday night's girls' basketball game between Punxsy and Elk County Catholic, something had to give with ECC a perfect 9-0 and Punxsy riding the wave of a three-game winning streak. In the end, the Lady Crusaders did what they had to do to preserve their perfect season with a 47-29 victory.

"We just didn't match their intensity playing on the road against a very good Elk County team," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said after the game.

From the start, Elk County jumped out to an early lead, and at the first break, Punxsy found itself in a 12-5 hole.

Pair of Chucks earn All-State mentions

January 12, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Jan. 4, Pennsylvania Football News announced its annual PFN All-State football teams for the 2011 season, and this year, two Chucks — defensive lineman Jacob Shiock and quarterback Garrett Zimmerman — were among those named as statewide honorable mentions.

"Any time athletes are recognized for their hard work, it's a good thing," Punxsy head football coach Alan Nichol said in an interview Wednesday. "PFN is not as media-driven as some of the other awards. They're more based on opposing coaches nominations and statistics. So it's a nice honor for these guys."
