Local youngsters compete in BB Tourney

January 25, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the weekend, the town of Punxsutawney — more specifically the Punxsutawney Area Community Center and SS.C.D. — hosted 14 different sixth-grade basketball teams, both boys' and girls' for an annual tournament.

Four different Punxsutaw- ney teams participated, and others traveled from Marion Center, Brookville, Penns Manor and as far away as Butler to participate.

No tournament champion was crowned in either division, but each team was guaranteed three to four games to gain valuable experience.

A synopsis of the Punxsy teams' games follows:

Punxsy wins in full-team effort

January 24, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — All 12 of the players who saw time for the Lady Chucks basketball team Monday night scored at least two points, and Punxsy cruised to a 70-16 victory over the Lady Owls of Harmony in Punxsutawney.

Despite the large number on the scoreboard for the Punxsy, it was a balanced attack, as Emily Horner and Taylor Newcome were the only two Punxsy players to reach double-digits, with 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Lady Chucks scored 46 of their 70 points in the first half and held the Lady Owls to just nine over the first two quarters.

Brookville battles back for win over Punxsy

BROOKVILLE — Although Punxsy jumped out to an early 13-0 lead Monday night against Brookville, the Raiders made some adjustments and battled back before sealing up the 54-52 victory.

Chucks head coach Dirk Neal decided to change up his defensive scheme at the beginning of the game, electing for a triangle and two set-up. The defense worked early, and the Chucks were able to capitalize.

Boys' Basketball

With 11 games in the books, the Punxsy boys' basketball team is halfway through the regular season. This story is a look back on the season so far and a glance forward to where they're headed.

Where they've been: The Chucks basketball team started the season with a number of questions surrounding how well it would perform after losing would-have-been starting senior guard Logan Weaver to Indiana.

So far this season, Punxsy has found answers to all the questions and jumped out to a 9-2 record, including a 3-0 record in District-IX play so far this season.

The Zak Zone

January 19, 2012

Academics is something that I have always held very near and dear in my life.

I grew up a bookworm, always reading every chance I could — a habit I wish I had continued throughout my adolescent and college years — and have always loved to study anything and everything.

Growing up, my favorite parts of the newspaper were the agate of the sports pages, where I could analyze the statistics and standings of each of my favorite sports, and the "Today in History" section, where in such a short amount of time I could learn so much about the history of a single day on the calendar.

Punxsy shoots lights out, grounds Lady Dutch

January 18, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite giving up a nine-point halftime lead in the third quarter, the Punxsy girls' basketball team battled back and outscored the Lady Dutch of St. Marys 20-8 in the final stanza to claim a 62-50 victory Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.

After the game, Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said battling back and not quitting are traits his young team possesses as a strength.

"These girls battle the entire game, whether we're up or down," he said. "They're going to play hard for 32 minutes. It's just a trait of this team."

Spack earns 100th victory, Punxsy comes up short

January 18, 2012

NEW BETHLEHEM — Punxsy wrestling coach Eric Eddy told anyone who asked him this week it would take "a perfect match" to beat Redbank Valley when the Chucks traveled there Tuesday night. Punxsy came within four points of reaching that match but fell just short in a 33-29 loss — one which saw Punxsy's Seth Spack reach the 100-win milestone to become just the fourth Chuck to do so.

Spack earned his 100th tonight, joining Neko Cappella, who did it this season, as well, and Matt Means and Kody Young as the only wrestlers in Punxsy history to reach the mark.
