Going to states: Raiders win D-IX Championship, advance to Hershey

February 6, 2012

DUBOIS — Avenging last season's upset loss to Ridgway and earning the District IX Class AA title were the only two things Brookville head coach Dave Klepfer and the Raiders wrestling squad had on their minds heading into Saturday's championship match.

The Raiders were strong, motivated and unstoppable, rolling over five-time district champ Ridgway for a 36-33 victory, the team championship title and a trip to the PIAA wrestling championship Thursday in Hershey.

ECC uses big 4th quarter to pick up win

February 4, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Friday night, the Lady Chucks wrapped up an extremely difficult week during which they hosted longtime rival Brookville Tuesday and concluded the week against an Elk County Catholic team that was 15-2 entering the contest.

Despite Punxsy playing right with the Lady Crusaders for the first three quarters, ECC pulled away after opening the fourth quarter on a 9-1 run in the first three minutes and cruised to a 34-24 victory in Punxsutawney.

Heart-breaker: Chucks fall by two at ECC

February 4, 2012

ST. MARYS — Friday morning's District-IX boys' basketball standings had Punxsy tied for first at the top of the heap, but they also showed five teams with just two losses. Friday evening's games were certain to stir things up, though, with all six teams playing league games.

The Chucks knew they could fall as low as a tie for fourth in the standings with just one loss, and in heart-breaking fashion, Punxsy did just that when a left-handed layup by Brandon Mancuso was blocked by Elk County's Brandon Schlimm to preserve a 47-45 win for the Crusaders.

Seventh-grade squad picks up the split

February 3, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the past week, Punxsy's seventh-grade boys' basketball team earned a split in a pair of tough games against DuBois and Ridgway.

Last Friday, the Chucks picked up a come-from-behind 23-22 victory over the Beavers by outscoring DuBois 12-6 in the final quarter.

While Punxsutawney was hosting the sixth-grade basketball tournament Jan. 21-22, a team of third-grade girls' basketball players traveled to compete in the Penns Manor basketball tournament and saw great success, finishing with a 3-1 record. The girls worked hard to reach their 3-1 record, Ben White, who submitted the above photo, said. The Zak Zone

February 2, 2012

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to quickly stop by Punxsutawney Area High School to snap some pictures at a pair of youth wrestling tournaments: The Groundhog Classic Saturday and the Novice Tournament Sunday.

Thinking back on the events, two things stood out to me.

First, I discovered that you can pack a lot of people into the gymnasium at PAHS.

Much to the events' credit, a total of nearly 600 wrestlers ages six-to-15 turned out for the annual tournaments, and the parking lot wasn't the only area that was nearly full.

During halftime at Tuesday's girls' basketball game, the winners and runners-up of the Elks Hoop Shoot held Jan. 5 at PAHS were honored. Participants in three different age groups — eight- and nine-year-olds, 10- and 11-year-olds and 12- and 13-year-olds — participated in the annual event.

Indoor track team opens season at Edinboro

February 2, 2012

EDINBORO — Last Saturday, the Punxsutawney Indoor Track and Field team opened its season by traveling to Edinboro University to compete along with more than 40 other Western Pennsylvania schools at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association's (TSTCA) Meet No. 2.

The TSTCA's Edinboro meet No. 1, scheduled for two weeks ago, had been cancelled due to extreme snow and weather conditions in Edinboro, and Punxsy coach John Smith said, "The kids were ready to go and were just glad to get a chance to run, jump or throw in an actual meet."

Shooting hands go cold, Lady Chucks fall

February 1, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The last time the Lady Chucks basketball team faced Brookville Dec. 15, 2011, the Lady Raiders were just too much for Punxsy's young squad to handle.

The rematch took place Tuesday night in Punxsutawney, and a more confident, experienced Lady Chucks team that has shown much improvement since that first meeting struggled to find it's rhythm early and couldn't overcome the deficit put up by Brookville's steady offense, as the Lady Raiders cruised to a 51-38 victory.

Punxsy edges victory in close mat match-ups

February 1, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy grapplers faced even match-ups Tuesday night against Hollidaysburg, and the Chucks edged just one more victory on the mat than the Tigers and earned themselves a 43-28 win.

The Tigers are running a small squad this year, and they knew going into Tuesday night's match-up they'd be giving up four forfeits. But the Chucks were having numbers issues themselves and returned the favor with three. Only seven matches took place on the mat.
