Punxsy impressive despite loss to Beavers

February 17, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite what resembles a disappointing night on the scoreboard, Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy was well pleased with his team's performance in a 50-20 loss to the DuBois Beavers Thursday night in Punxsutawney — the Chucks' regular season finale.

"Overall, it was a very good match tonight," Eddy said. "The guys wrestled very well. There were some tight matches, and overall, I'm very pleased with our performance."

Chucks' 7th-grade picks up big win over B-way

February 17, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Chucks' seventh-grade basketball team put up an impressive 50 points, and the defense played almost equally as impressively Monday night at Brockway helping the Chucks cruise to a 50-21 victory over the Rovers.

DuBois thwarts Raiders on its way to D-IX League title

February 17, 2012

BROOKVILLE — Senior Night is always an important night for everyone involved. But Brookville's game Wednesday night was meaningful for a much bigger reason — the Raiders needed a win for a share of the D-IX League title.

Unfortunately, they were matched up against the DuBois Beavers, who had already secured their share of the title, and DuBois stormed to a 39-30 victory and became the lone title champions.

Chucks down Bison, finish season 9-2 at home

February 16, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — From the very first day of practice this season, Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal said one of the Chucks' top goals was to protect their own house and win their home games this season.

Wednesday night, the Chucks played their final home game of the season and did just that, picking up a 49-37 victory over District IX foe Clearfield to finish the season 9-2 at home.

Punxsy JHers keep rolling with win over Bradford

February 16, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a similar tale to the varsity match that took place after it, the dual meet between Punxsy and Bradford's junior high wrestling teams Tuesday in Punxsutawney was a tale of numbers, a common occurrence for the Chucks this season. But in this case, Punxsy's numbers were better than Bradfords, as the Chucks outdid the Owls both on and off the mats for a 47-15 victory.

With Bradford being a larger school, Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said he was surprised and a bit disappointed to see the Owls' numbers down, as they brought just seven grapplers.

The Zak Zone

Some weeks when I sit down to write my column, I struggle to find a way to communicate an idea I've been bouncing around in my head and, since it's a sports column, to find a way tie sports into it.

Other weeks, the story itself just falls into my lap and begs me to write about it. This week's column falls into the latter category.

Growing up as a Christian and a huge sports fan, I heard the word "miracle" used in two very different contexts quite often, and the seeming double meaning has caused me to frequently ponder the miraculous over the years.

Seniors headline Chucks' victory vs. Owls

February 15, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was Senior Night on the mats at the PAHS gymnasium for the Chucks wrestling team, which took on Bradford Tuesday night, and despite a small Bradford squad, Punxsy was able to match each senior with an opponent and come out victorious, 54-15, over the Owls.

"The kids wrestled really well tonight," Punxsy coach Eric Eddy said after the match. "Each senior was able to get a match in, and it was good to pick up the win on Senior Night."

She did it again: Magill wins it at the horn

February 14, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The buzz around the PAHS gym after Punxsy senior guard Alex Magill, the team's only senior, was recognized on her Senior Night before the girls' varsity game against A-C Valley was, "It's a shame Friday wasn't senior night."

That's because Magill hit a go-ahead three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Chucks a three-point victory Friday over DuBois.

Monday night was no less fitting, though, as Magill pulled off the once-in-a-lifetime sort of feat twice in four days, draining a deep two as the clock ticked to zero to give Punxsy a 49-47 win over the Lady Falcons.

Chucks use full team effort, sneak past Cats

February 14, 2012

HOMER CITY — The Punxsy Chucks basketball team went on the road to take on the Bobcats of Homer Center Monday night in an out-of-league contest that proved to be a good tune-up game heading into its final two league games Wednesday and Friday. But the Chucks came away with a 68-64 victory over Homer Center in what Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal called "a full team effort."

Punxsy senior guard Alex Fedigan was sidelined with an injury, forcing fellow-senior Ian Miller into the starting lineup, and Miller proved to be one of four Chucks scorers in double digits.

Raiders split weekend D-IX League games

February 13, 2012

BROOKVILLE — Saturday night's match-up against Elk County Catholic (12-9, 6-3 D-IX League) was a big test for the Raiders heading into the final week of the regular season.

Brookville (16-4, 6-3 D-IX League) stormed out to an early lead, but the Crusaders turned the tables and pushed the game to overtime.

But only one shot mattered — the game-winning shot by Elk County's Brock McCullough with seven seconds remaining in overtime for the 34-32 victory over Brookville.
