Punxsy looks for strides in Homecoming tilt

September 21, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Following a tough contest on a rainy night last week, the Punxsy Chucks return to the gridiron looking to make some positive strides as a team to celebrate the school’s Homecoming this evening.

Punxsy has suffered some misfortune in the last pair of contests, as it fell to a veteran Union High team on the road, 21-6, before seeing the buzz- saw big-play offense of DuBois cut into the home team, 50-6 last Friday in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks do have the solace of both defeats having come at the hands of two undefeated foes.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At times you cannot tell how great of an event the contest played was by what the scoreboard says. This was the case when Punxsy hosted Altoona in girls' volleyball Thursday night. The Lady Lions did prove to have the scoreboard in their favor, 3-0, when the match was completed.

"Our players played a phenomenal game tonight," said Lady Chucks' head coach Heather Good. "The final score doesn't reflect how the match was, as each game could of went either way."

The momentum in the long run went the visiting Altoona's way by game scores of 16-25, 22-25 and 16-25.

PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Punxsy 8th-grade girls' basketball team held its own Thursday afternoon but Altoona played a consistent game to win, 37-21.

"The girls played as well as they have all season for about two and a half quarters," said Punxsy coach Mike Carlson. "To beat a team that good we need to put all four quarters together."

Alli Lunger paced the Punxsy (3-3) effort with seven points including three of four free throws. Point guard Morgan VanLeer added three buckets for six points.
