PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” The Punxsy Chucks once again hold the Route 36 title after defeating the Brookville Raiders in a hard fought 26-23 season opener behind a strong rushing effort by Jamie Bush and Christian Falgout.
"It was nice to have (senior quarterback) Garrett Zimmerman and Jamie Bush in there to lead, and I thought Falgout and (Caesar) Maruca did a nice job of blocking from their running back spots," said Punxsy head football coach Alan Nichol.
Punxsy took the first go at offense after Brookville's Cameron Yard kicked off the ball to officially start the Chucks' season.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” A young, but what is expected to be a highly competitive Punxsy girls' cross country team, will toe the starting line for the first time of the 2012 season this morning at the annual Big Valley Invitational.
â€śIâ€™m excited to get the season started after three solid weeks of practice, and I assume the girls are ready to go as well,â€ť said head coach George Wehrle. â€śYou can find out a lot of things about your fitness at practice, but thereâ€™s nothing like a race to really let you know just where you stand.â€ť
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Rivalries are always the most anticipated contests of each year for sports teams. No matter what type of season a team is having, if the most heated foe can be defeated, all adversity that is faced can be forgotten.
The 2012 version of the Route 36 Trophy contest will not have to wait and be anticipated for weeks to come.
The Brookville Raiders will invade Jack F. LaMarca Stadium this evening starting at 7 p.m. to kick-off the 2012 campaign against the Punxsy Chucks on the gridiron.
DUBOIS â€” For the second time in the early fall season, the Punxsy boys' golfers took care of rival DuBois in impressive fashion, 159-200, on Monday at DuBois Country Club.
The trio of Mike Blose, Brandon Mancuso and Logan Reed continued to pace the Chucks finishers by posting rounds of 38, 39 and 40 on the par 35 front nine holes. Along with the top three finishers, Eli Thompson (42) and Austin Couser (44) gave Punxsy the top five golfers of the day, all hitting under 45.
Wednesday afternoon, the First and Ten Club hosted a "Meet the Chucks" event, where local fans could come to the high school, enjoy some food and meet this year's football and cheerleading squads. The event was a huge success, and now the teams turn to preparations for next Friday's season opener against Brookville.
BROOKVILLE â€” The Brookville Raiders varsity boys' golf squad was able to top the Punxsy Chucks for the first time since 2006 Wednesday in Brookville.
The Raiders narrowly defeated the Chucks with a 167-172 win at the Pinecrest Country Club.
Brookville's No.1 golfer, Jack Huggins, captured the lowest score Wednesday with a 37.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” The 2012 Punxsy boys golf team will strive for another solid season after a 6-3 regular season last year that earned it a District IX title.
Punxsy's season kicks off today with a match against DuBois at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” These days, you may best recognize him as "Big Chill," a member of Punxsy Phil's Groundhog Club Inner Circle, but long before he was such an integral part of Punxsy's biggest party, Jason Grusky was on the radar of members of the community for a different reason: his impressive athletics career at Punxsutawney Area High School.
These 27 A.J. Parise Senior football players are all smiles at the end of their evening practice this week in Punxsutawney. They are ready to take the field for the first time this season Saturday evening at 7:15 p.m. at the Jack LaMarca Stadium. The Bantam team will play at 4 p.m. followed by the Junior team playing at 5:30 p.m. Come and cheer our local youth against the Grove City Eagles.
The White team became the 2012 Punxsy Community Center Summer Basketball League champions with a hard-fought 55-52 win over the Green team Monday night.
