MEADVILLE â The Punxsy 10- and 11- year old softball All-Stars just won't quit, as they defeated Avon Grove, 10-8, in the losers bracket Tuesday. Punxsy faces a tough Exton team today at 1 p.m. that it must defeat twice to claim the State title.
Punxsy did all of its scoring in the third and fifth inning to defeat Avon Grove. It scored four runs in the third and six in the fifth.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â In need of a win to push itself into contention for a spot in the Youth Legion state playoffs, Punxsy's I-Medical got just that with a convincing offensive barrage, putting up 13 runs over just five innings to earn a 13-2 victory over Warren after a long rain delay Tuesday evening in Punxsutawney.
I-Medical was the visiting team, and it wasted no time putting Warren in a hole, scoring four runs on six hits and batting around its lineup.
July 30th
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsy's Junior Legion team â I-Medical â earned a split in Monday's action at the Western Regional tournament, which the Punxsy squad was hosting, putting itself in a position where it must win at least another game today to move into the top three and advance to states.
I-Medical started the day with a 12-8 win over West Hempfield. Despite a late run by West Hempfield, the host squad earned its berth in the winners' bracket final.
I-Medical started the game, after being named the visiting team, with a one-run first inning.
BROOKVILLE â Two key innings, the first and seventh, gave the Senators the edge they needed to claim a 5-1 Game 3 victory Monday at McKinley Field. Brookville played top-notch defense in innings two through six but could never generate any scoring momentum to match Sykesvilleâs effort.
âWe played better than pretty good; (Brookville) dropped that one fly ball and that ball that slid past the first baseman; those two things broke our bats, and we never mended them after that,â said Bob McCullough, Brookville Grays manager.
July 29th
PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Punxsy I-Medical came out with a bang in their dominating 11-0 victory over Farmington that ended after five innings last night at the Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.
Before the game, relatives of Rich Kuntz gathered on the field for the ceremonial first pitch. Mary Jane (Kuntz) Buffington, handed the ball to grandson Johnny Buffinton, along with two-year-old grandson Ashton Buffington, to toss the ceremonial first pitch to fellow grandson and I-Medical right fielder Ruben Taylor at home plate.
REYNOLDSVILLE â In a game that ended up taking approximately 49 hours from first pitch to final out after play was suspended in the second inning Thursday evening due to a torrential downpour, the Brookville Grays earned a 5-3, nine-inning victory over the Sykesville Senators Sunday evening in Reynoldsville to even the Federation League finals at one game apiece.
After falling 14-1 in the series' opening game, Brookville found a way to cool the hot Sens' bats, and with some solid pitching and a timely two-run home run by Eric Painter in the top of the ninth, the Grays earned the win.
July 27th
Sports fans, you may have noticed that Thursday's edition of Spirit Sports was lacking the weekly column, The Zak Zone. That's because I was trying to fabricate the best manner to say, "So long," to pages 6&7 as I prepared for a journey toward the rest of the pages in The Spirit.
As of, well, today, as you're reading this, I'm now officially the editor of the paper, and while you'll still be able to read my musings â at times sports related and at other times completely unrelated â on Viewpoints on Page 4 on Mondays, I'm a bit saddened that The Zak Zone is being put to rest.
Chelsea Snyder blasts off to first after recording an RBI-single in Punxsy's 9-7 win over Corry on July 20 for the Section 1 10- and 11-year-old softball title. Today, Punxsy faces Friday's winner between Jersey Shore and Mifflin Co. in the second round of the state tournament.
July 25th
BROOKVILLE â The red-hot Sykesville Senators carried their momentum from their 4-2 series win over the top-seeded and two-time defending champion DuBois Rockets to help land a dominating 14-1 Game 1 win over the Brookville Grays Wednesday night at McKinley Field in Brookville.
"We didn't have much going from any stand point; the pitching was just a little bit less than what we expected," said Bob McCullough, Brookville Grays manager.
July 24th
BROOKVILLE â The matchup isn't exactly David versus Goliath, but after knocking off the regular season Federation League champion â the DuBois Rockets â the Sykesville Senators, who finished the season 10-10 as the No. 4 seed, are gearing up to take on the regular season's No. 2-seeded Brookville Grays in the Fed League finals.
The Grays finished the season with a 15-5 record â identical to the Rockets' record â but with DuBois being crowned league champion, both teams earned byes into the semi-finals and had to await their opponents.
