Cameron's perfect game propels Rotary Reds

June 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Some nights, a pitcher just has wicked, nasty, unhittable "stuff," but even when that is the case, the hurler rarely pulls off the elusive perfect game. Monday night in Punxsutawney, the Rotary Reds' Senior League softball team's pitcher — Monica Cameron — did just that, though, retiring 15 straight hitters, as the offense poured on 11 runs in just four innings to lead the team to an 11-0, five-inning victory over Brockway Drug.

Adding to the evidence that Cameron possessed the "wicked, nasty stuff" that is so rare was her line: Five innings with 12 strikeouts.

Punxsy splits a pair in 15/16 VFW action

June 10, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Sunday afternoon, the Punxsy VFW 15- and 16-year-old team hosted Cumming Motors of Altoona for a morning-afternoon double header, and after picking up a thrilling win in the first game, Punxsy fell in the second to earn a split.

Despite trailing 4-3 entering the final inning of the first game, Punxsy's squad bounced back to manufacture a pair of seventh-inning runs to earn a 5-4, walk-off victory.

The come-from-behind inning started with a pair of back-to-back walks by Punxsy's Scott Thompson and Ruben Taylor.

From foes to allies: It's that time of year again

June 8, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Although it seems to many as if the season was just beginning yesterday, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League's regular season schedule is starting to wind down for the 2012 campaign.

One group in particular — the 11- and 12-year-old girls' softball division — actually concludes its regular season a bit earlier than the rest, with the regular schedule ending this coming week.

With the end of each regular season comes an exciting time: The selection of the respective division's All-Star team.

GETTIN' DOWN AND GETTIN' DIRTY

June 7, 2012

Rossiter Miners' first baseman Tyler Skerkavich dives safely into second base as the ball skips past NAPA Auto Parts' shortstop Mark Guthridge in the fourth inning of Thursday's game between the two squads. Despite his dirty uniform, though, Skerkavich and the rest of the Miners will have to wait until June 24 — during their breast cancer awareness tournament — to determine the outcome, as the game was called after a downpour in the bottom of the fifth inning made the field unplayable.

I-Medical downs Fezell in battle of Punxsy squads

June 6, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY —Two big innings told the story when the more-experienced I-Medical team defeated the younger Fezell Enterprises team 11-1 in five innings in Indiana County Youth League action Wednesday in Punxsutawney.

A six-run first started it, and after three zeroes on the board, I-Medical added five more in the fifth to end it.

The I-Medical offense jumped out to a fast start, scoring six runs on just two hits and five walks in the home half of the first after Ryan Jones set Fezell down in order in the top half.

The Zak Zone

June 6, 2012

Early Wednesday morning — and by early Wednesday morning, I mean shortly after I woke up at 10:30 a.m. — I was sitting on my front porch enjoying some sunshine, a cool breeze, a cup of coffee and a good book, when some background noise caught my ear.

It was a repetitive series of sounds — wheels whirring across pavement, feet lifting from a surface, temporary silence and, finally, a crashing sound.

Turned out, it was my next door neighbor's oldest son trying to perfect the art of an ollie on his skateboard.

Sloniger slam not enough for Chucks in opener

June 4, 2012

ST. MARYS — With rain clouds looming and a few showers hitting Berwind Park in St. Marys, it appeared as if the Chucks' PIAA Class AAA opening round game against Belle Vernon may be delayed due to inclement weather.

That never happened, but there was an unfortunate 40-minute delay due to a benches-clearing incident as Belle Vernon relief pitcher Dom Francia was being warned for brushing back Punxsy's No. 3 hitter Ty Zimmerman twice in a row.

One bad inning runs Lady Chucks out of playoffs

June 4, 2012

NORTH ALLEGHENY — Entering the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA State Championship tournament, the Lady Chucks knew what was ahead of them: A solid hitting team in the Lady Spartans of Moniteau and a steady pitcher they'd have to make contact against.

Unfortunately for the Lady Chucks, that steady pitcher, Kaitlyn Kutchman, pitched a complete game, walking none, striking out ten and allowing just one run on three hits, and Montour earned a 4-1 victory behind three unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Despite valiant effort, Raiders fall to Riverside

June 4, 2012

BROCKWAY- The defending State Champion Riverside Panthers (18-6) proved to be too much for the Brookville Raiders (15-5) to handle during the opening round of the PIAA Class AA State Playoffs, as the Panthers earned a 6-3 victory Monday in Brockway.

"None of us wanted the season to end today, but I told the kids to keep their heads up; we had a good year," said Raiders Head Coach Kenny Lindermuth.

After a traffic-related delay to the game, both teams came out hot offensively.
