ST. MARYS — With rain clouds looming and a few showers hitting Berwind Park in St. Marys, it appeared as if the Chucks' PIAA Class AAA opening round game against Belle Vernon may be delayed due to inclement weather.
That never happened, but there was an unfortunate 40-minute delay due to a benches-clearing incident as Belle Vernon relief pitcher Dom Francia was being warned for brushing back Punxsy's No. 3 hitter Ty Zimmerman twice in a row.
NORTH ALLEGHENY — Entering the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA State Championship tournament, the Lady Chucks knew what was ahead of them: A solid hitting team in the Lady Spartans of Moniteau and a steady pitcher they'd have to make contact against.
Unfortunately for the Lady Chucks, that steady pitcher, Kaitlyn Kutchman, pitched a complete game, walking none, striking out ten and allowing just one run on three hits, and Montour earned a 4-1 victory behind three unearned runs in the fifth inning.
BROCKWAY- The defending State Champion Riverside Panthers (18-6) proved to be too much for the Brookville Raiders (15-5) to handle during the opening round of the PIAA Class AA State Playoffs, as the Panthers earned a 6-3 victory Monday in Brockway.
"None of us wanted the season to end today, but I told the kids to keep their heads up; we had a good year," said Raiders Head Coach Kenny Lindermuth.
After a traffic-related delay to the game, both teams came out hot offensively.
