Little Leaguers win, force rubber match at home Sunday with DuBois

June 29, 2012

DUBOIS — After earning home field advantage as the king seed in a thrilling, 3-2 victory Monday, DuBois' Little League softball All-Stars knew they'd be getting everything Punxsy had to throw at them Friday night in the first of what the visiting squad hoped would be a two-game weekend.

Punxsy got its wish, defeating DuBois 11-3 and earning a rubber match on Punxsy's turf Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. for the title of District X champion — even though the victory didn't guarantee a home game.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was an action-packed evening at the Groundhog Little League complex, with Punxsy hosting a pair of All-Star games Friday evening. PUNXSUTAWNEY — Leading 11-9 after four-and-a-half innings, the Punxsy Minor League softball squad knew it had to minimize the offensive output of DuBois to earn a second-consecutive win in the All-Star tournament, but a three-run fifth inning by DuBois gave it just enough to squeak by the host Friday night with a 12-11 win in Punxsutawney.

Despite the outcome, Punxsy head coach Rob Gemmell was very pleased with his girls' performance on the field.
