ROSSITER — With the standings tight at the top of the Federation League and three teams vying for the two coveted first-round byes, the Rossiter Miners did their part Thursday night to come one step closer to the time off with a 16-4, five-inning victory over NAPA Auto Parts of DuBois — pulling them within 0.5 games of first place.
ST. MARYS — In the second round of the 11- and 12-year-old baseball All-Stars tournament, Punxsy picked up a convincing 11-6 victory over St. Marys to earn a berth in the winners' bracket championship and the right to play for the tournament's king seed Monday in DuBois.
After the game, Punxsy head coach Brad Gigliotti had lots of positives to point out about his team's performance.
Anyone who even vaguely knows me could tell you with 100-percent certainty that fashion sense is not exactly my forté — and that is probably even putting it nicely.
Sandals with socks made my family cringe when I was a teenager, yet I donned them regardless of their opinions.
Even earlier — in my pre-teen years — I owned a pair of shoes that were a color I had never seen before. They were a mix between red and purple — a color I belovingly called "cherry cola."
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Although Punxsy was the host for Wednesday evening's nine- and 10-year-old All-Star game against St. Marys, the coin toss before the game determined that St. Marys would be the home team, and thus get last at-bats. But Punxsy used the momentum that came with a big first inning to go on to earn a 6-3 victory over St. Marys in a game the host never trailed.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Alli Ishman threw her second no-hitter of the 11- and 12-year-old softball All-Star tournament to out-duel fellow pitcher Maddie Loutzenheiser — who didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning — in Punxsy's 2-0 win over Warren in the District X losers' bracket final Wednesday in Punxsutawney.
With the win, Punxsy set up a rematch with DuBois, which knocked Punxsy into the losers' bracket Monday with a walk-off, 3-2 victory. Punxsy hopes to avenge the loss to DuBois Friday, when it travels there for the second time this week, and set up a rubber match for the District X crown.
BROOKVILLE — Punxsy's power proved to be too much for the Brookville All-Star squad to handle Wednesday night in Brookville, as Punxsy defeated Brookville 26-9 after five innings.
Punxsy batted first and came out hot right from the get-go. In the first inning, Madison Stonbraker had an RBI-triple to center field to score the first run of the game.
Jessica Lisa followed with an RBI of her own to bring Stonbraker home. The next five batters — Laney Monroe, Tagen Ludwig, Haley Maines, Abby Gemmell and Abbi Riskus — were all walked to bring in another four runs.
