Four Punxsy athletes are headed to states

May 16, 2012

KANE — The ultimate goal for any athlete heading into the District IX AAA Track and Field Championships is to earn a berth to states, and Wednesday afternoon in Kane, four Punxsy athletes found out they'll be making that trip to Shippensburg next weekend for the PIAA state tournament.

One athlete, boys' runner Kevin Hughes — who is just a sophomore — qualified by finishing first in the district. Hughes' event was the 400-meter dash, and his time of 50.26 seconds was his best of the season and gave him first place by more than 1.3 seconds.

DUBOIS — Wednesday, the Chucks' top doubles duo of Michael Blose and Tim Pearce set out to earn a second-straight District IX doubles championship knowing all the other pairs were gunning for them, and after Pearce and Blose advanced to the finals, they were defeated in a close match against DuBois' top pair of Patrick Johnson and Matt Fultz.

Johnson and Fultz downed Blose and Pearce in three close sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to be crowned champions.

THE RAIN JUST WOULDN'T GO AWAY

Members of the Punxsy high school baseball team, (from left) Michael Klingensmith, Luke Janocha, Ty Zimmerman and Dane Baker, pass the time during a break between rain storms playing a game, as wet weather delayed a double header with Brookville. Unfortunately, the pastime was the only game able to be played, as a late burst of rain muddied the field that many had worked so hard to get back into playing shape. The Lady Chucks' softball double header was also rained out.
