PUNXSUTAWNEY — This afternoon, four AAA schools from District IX will send their best athletes to compete at the D-IX Track and Field Championships in Kane, and Punxsy head coach Barry Young said this year's field is one of the deepest and strongest he has seen in some time.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Five teams will travel to the boys' District IX Track and Field Championships this afternoon at Kane, but two are considered powerhouses — DuBois and Bradford — and it's expected to be a back-and-forth event for the two teams. But that doesn't mean Punxsy's squad doesn't have high aspirations of earning a few surprise first-place finishes and moving on to the state tournament May 31 at Shippensburg University.
"The bottom line is, it looks like it will be a big cat and mouse game between Bradford and DuBois," Punxsy head coach John Smith said.
With the busy graduation season ahead, the Punxsy Lady Chucks softball team took a break from its final week of the regular season to hold its banquet Tuesday night at the Eagles. After the team and family members enjoyed a meal together, Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer and JV coach Ken Covatch each addressed their players and thanked them for the hard work they've put in this year. A slide show of memories throughout the season was shown, and the evening ended with Pifer recognizing the five senior members of his team.
