PUNXSUTAWNEY — Things looked bleak for the Punxsy softball team heading into the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday afternoon trailing Bald Eagle 7-1, but after a come-from-behind victory over the Lady Beavers of DuBois last night, Punxsy battled back with six sixth-inning runs to tie the game.
Unfortunately, though, Punxsy's luck ran out, as the Bald Eagles plated a run in the top of the seventh and kept Punxsy off the scoreboard for an 8-7 win.
DUBOIS — After falling to DuBois in the District IX team finals Wednesday afternoon, Punxsy had a shot to earn its revenge in the singles title against a difficult foe in DuBois' No. 1 singles player, Trey Gilmore. But the Chucks' top singles players, Michael Blose and Tim Pearce, each fell to Gilmore — the eventual champion — Thursday in DuBois.
Despite a loss on the score sheet, Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley said Blose battled Gilmore in what was most likely his strongest match of the season. Gilmore just proved to be too much and went on to win 6-4, 6-2.
DUBOIS — DuBois' JV baseball team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning against Punxsy Wednesday in DuBois, but the Chucks battled back to earn an 8-7 victory over the Beavers.
DuBois' five spot in the first came off four walks and three timely hits, and the score remained 5-0 until the top of the fourth, when Hunter Hickok started the inning with a single.
Hickok stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Falgout. Brandon Blose pushed Punxsy's first run across the plate with a fielder's choice.
