PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsy starting pitcher Johnna Depp was sharp, striking out four in three innings work, and the Lady Chucks' offense was equally as sharp, putting up 18 runs to defeat Bradford 18-2 in three innings in the season opener Monday night in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy used three quick first-inning runs to jump out to a lead, but head coach Alan Pifer said it wasn't until the second inning, during which the Lady Chucks batted around and scored nine runs, that the offense started firing on all cylinders.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Leading just 3-2 entering the bottom half of the sixth inning, Punxsy's baseball team scored four insurance runs to push its lead to 7-2, and the Chucks went on to beat the Bradford Owls by that score Monday in the season opener at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
"The first one's always good," Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said. "It certainly wasn't pretty, but we don't give back wins, that's for sure."
Dickey said that despite a few mistakes on the base paths and defensively, one area stood out as a glaring strength for the Chucks: Pitching.
Monday evening, members of the 2011-12 Punxsy girls' basketball team gathered one last time as a team for their annual banquet. The team enjoyed a dinner at Neko's Restaurant & Lounge, and letter winners were presented their pins.
