'Curse' is broken: Young crowned PJW champ Giavedoni places, five others compete

March 30, 2012

HERSHEY — Last Saturday, seven Punxsutawney area wrestlers traveled to Hershey to compete on Pennsylvania's largest stage for grapplers their age — the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament — and one grappler attained a long-awaited, highly-coveted prize when Kaleb Young was crowned state champion at 117 pounds in the 13- and 14-year-old class.

"We can't be happy enough for Kaleb," Punxsy coach Bill Burke said upon returning from Hershey. "I guess we can say 'the third time is a charm,' as he was a state runner-up twice previously."

Schall making great strides at next leve

CLARION — With lots of former PAHS athletes reaching successful accomplishments at the collegiate level of late, one former Lady Chuck has been quietly running away at Clarion University— quite literally.

Milea Schall, a 2011 PAHS grad and long-distance event specialist, is described as a pretty quiet sort of athlete, who goes about her business by her former coach George Wehrle. But Schall has been making some noise as a freshman at Clarion, having made the transition to college athletics — and academics — seem quite seamless.

'Polished' Beavers squad too much for Chucks

March 29, 2012

DUBOIS — Coming off a convincing win against DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday, the Punxsy boys' tennis team knew it'd have its hands full Thursday against the DuBois Beavers in DuBois, and the Beavers proved to be too much in a 7-2 victory over the Chucks.

"We knew DuBois would be a little more polished, because they were a little more experienced," Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley said after the match.

One thing stood out to Heigley as an area the team could have improved its chances: Being more aggressive on the offensive end.

The Zak Zone

March 29, 2012

Last week, I wrote about the fact that some things never seem to change, as witnessed at a wiffle ball game in my great-grandmother's backyard.

This week, I'm unfortunately writing about the fact that some things are just bound to change.

Some change, I must admit, is a good thing. But in some sports, it just seems like they're trying to mess with my nostalgic remembrance of the way things ought to be.

One area in which I've noticed a reasonable change this year is in one of my favorite holidays: Opening Day of the Major League Baseball season.

And they're off: Punxsy grabs a pair of dual wins at opener

March 27, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy boys' track and field team is off to the races, and with a pair of dual meet wins — 93.5-56.5 over Hollidaysburg and 105-45 over ECC — things are looking bright for the Chucks so far.

"Overall, we got off to a good start," Punxsy head coach John Smith said. "We had a lot of kids scoring, and all of the teams were glad to get one under their belts."

Coach Young likes what he sees, ECC drops Lady Chucks

March 27, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With some mechanical difficulties preventing Hollidaysburg's girls' track team from making the trip to Punxsy, the pair of dual meets the Lady Chucks had scheduled for Tuesday turned into a single dual meet against Elk County Catholic, and the Lady Crusaders earned an 87-63 victory over Punxsy in the season opener.

Despite the final result, Punxsy head coach Barry Young was pleased with his squad's performance against a difficult ECC team.

Punxsy's bats roll out of the gates to drop Lady Owls

March 26, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy starting pitcher Johnna Depp was sharp, striking out four in three innings work, and the Lady Chucks' offense was equally as sharp, putting up 18 runs to defeat Bradford 18-2 in three innings in the season opener Monday night in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy used three quick first-inning runs to jump out to a lead, but head coach Alan Pifer said it wasn't until the second inning, during which the Lady Chucks batted around and scored nine runs, that the offense started firing on all cylinders.

Chucks come up big in 6th to sweep past Bradford, 7-2

March 26, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Leading just 3-2 entering the bottom half of the sixth inning, Punxsy's baseball team scored four insurance runs to push its lead to 7-2, and the Chucks went on to beat the Bradford Owls by that score Monday in the season opener at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

"The first one's always good," Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said. "It certainly wasn't pretty, but we don't give back wins, that's for sure."

Dickey said that despite a few mistakes on the base paths and defensively, one area stood out as a glaring strength for the Chucks: Pitching.
