This past weekend, I had the opportunity to quickly stop by Punxsutawney Area High School to snap some pictures at a pair of youth wrestling tournaments: The Groundhog Classic Saturday and the Novice Tournament Sunday.
Thinking back on the events, two things stood out to me.
First, I discovered that you can pack a lot of people into the gymnasium at PAHS.
Much to the events' credit, a total of nearly 600 wrestlers ages six-to-15 turned out for the annual tournaments, and the parking lot wasn't the only area that was nearly full.
During halftime at Tuesday's girls' basketball game, the winners and runners-up of the Elks Hoop Shoot held Jan. 5 at PAHS were honored. Participants in three different age groups — eight- and nine-year-olds, 10- and 11-year-olds and 12- and 13-year-olds — participated in the annual event.
EDINBORO — Last Saturday, the Punxsutawney Indoor Track and Field team opened its season by traveling to Edinboro University to compete along with more than 40 other Western Pennsylvania schools at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association's (TSTCA) Meet No. 2.
The TSTCA's Edinboro meet No. 1, scheduled for two weeks ago, had been cancelled due to extreme snow and weather conditions in Edinboro, and Punxsy coach John Smith said, "The kids were ready to go and were just glad to get a chance to run, jump or throw in an actual meet."
