Rovers' range too much for Raiders

December 31, 2012

DUBOIS — The Brockway Rovers deep threats, combined with a strong fourth quarter from Clay Anderson, was too much for the Raiders to handle in their 56-40 loss in the consolation game at the DuBois Holiday tournament Saturday.

The Raiders faced the Rovers for the second time Saturday and gave them a much stronger effort than their 69-24 loss in the championship game of the Brookville tip-off tournament on Dec. 8.

Beavers best Raiders in tourney opener, 57-42

December 31, 2012

DUBOIS — In what was a close game for most of the contest, the DuBois Beavers were able to pull away in the fourth quarter to best Brookville, 57-42, in the opening round of the Holiday tournament Friday night.

"We turned the ball over a little bit and we got a little impatient at times against their press and forced some things... I thought our transition defense hurt us even more than that with (not) getting back defensively and giving up a couple freebies," said Kevin Wolfe, Raiders varsity coach.

Punxsy wrestlers have tough night on mat in Clearfield

December 21, 2012

CLEARFIELD — Just as the weather was rainy outside Thursday night, the tough forecast inside the Clearfield High School gymnasium turned out to be the case.

The Punxsy wrestlers claimed only three victories against a veteran Clearfield squad to fall by a 63-12 score.

"Overall in the match, nothing went our way," explained Chucks head coach Eric Eddy. "You have nights like this, and I told the kids it is better to have it now than later (in the season). We were just outwrestled
tonight."

Chucks start slow but fly past the Owls

December 21, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It may have taken most of the first quarter to come to life, but by midway through the second half, the Chucks boys' basketball team was on cruise control Thursday night, and after a Devin Nicholson basket five minutes into the game to give Punxsy the 6-5 lead, the Chucks would never trail again, as they flew past visiting Harmony, 54-31, in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks received an early boost off their bench from junior Michael Klingensmith, who finished with a season-best 10 points to go with four assists, six rebounds and a steal.

Late drive helps DCC edge Punxsy girls

December 19, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Leading for only the second time all night with 1:16 left in the game, Punxsy played stifling defense for the next 1:08 but it turned out to not be enough, as DuBois Central Catholic’s Aundrea Snyder took advantage of a late home defensive breakdown to drive the right baseline for a layup with approximately 7.6 seconds to regain the lead for her team, 34-33 Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

“DCC set a screen, and we didn’t jump out and get to jump it, and the girl made a nice shot,” said Lady Chucks coach Randy Reitz.

Lady Chucks grind out road victory over Lady Bison

December 18, 2012

CLEARFIELD — Winning can either be exciting and high scoring or lower scoring and methodical.

After racing past rival Brookville last Thursday, Punxsy grinded out a road victory, 39-29, over Clearfield on Monday night in Clearfield.

“It was a grind-out game. We didn’t shoot the ball well from the perimeter but we played very good defense and had very good ball pressure,” noted Lady Chucks coach Randy Reitz. “We also did a very nice job on Clearfield’s big girls.”

December 18, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Coming out trailing from the intermission, Punxsy turned up the second-half defensive heat to give Homer Center its first loss of the season, 64-60, Monday night in Punxsutawney.
