DuBOIS – After the tournament was pushed back a day, Punxsy's Amber Ward captured second place in the District IX girls' tennis singles championship held Wednesday in DuBois.
Both Ward and fellow senior Lauren Wolfe had solid outings in the singles playoffs.
In the first round, Ward enjoyed a bye, while Wolfe recorded an impressive 10-0 shut out of Bradford's Hannah Burgoon.
For her first court action in the semi-finals, Ward defeated DuBois' Kristen Adamson in two sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — On a nice afternoon for football, Punxsy's seventh-and eighth- grade team tackled Clarion, 27-6, from start to finish on Wednesday afternoon.
"The kids are improving and getting better each week," pointed out Chucks coach Brad Constantino. "The entire coaching staff feels the kids are going in the right direction in their growth as players."
The improvement and growth was evident from the first quarter. Punxsy's Jacob Weaver pulled in a 55-yard scoring strike from quarterback Ethan Riley to get the home team on the board, 7-0.
PUNXSUTAWNEY – After taking a double figure lead into the final quarter, the Punxsy seventh-grade girls' basketball team had to hang on for the win, 28-22, against a charging DuBois Central squad on Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
The pair of Leah Miller and Kaitlyn Doverspike led the Lady Chucks' (10-1) effort with six points apiece.
Only a point behind, Elyse White and Kylee Lingenfelter added five points each.
Alyse Whitman chipped in four tallies, while Toya Jones had two points to complete the Punxsy scoring line.
