Week 10 downfall for the Raiders

November 5, 2011

NEW BETHLEHEM — Two quick second-quarter touchdowns for Redbank Valley were difficult for the Brookville Raiders to combat Friday night, and they fell 20-7 in the final week of the regular season.

"It was extremely disappointing," Raiders head coach Chris Dworek said. "All the positive things we did the last few weeks, and to end Week 10 like this is just disappointing."

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Both Punxsy and Karns City's defenses shutout their opponents in the seventh- and eighth-grade football game Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney. But Punxsy's Adam Milliron managed a strip-sack for a fumble, and Kaleb Young recovered it in the end zone for the only score of the game, as the Chucks defeated the Gremlins, 8-0.

"What a fantastic game to coach, to watch and to be a part of," Punxsy head coach Jason Grusky said after the game. "These guys make us look good. We're fortunate to have them as players, and these players make us look good as coaches."

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After jumping out to a 16-0 first half lead, the Karns City Gremlins ninth-grade team held off a late surge by the Chucks to earn a 22-12 win Thursday night in Punxsutawney.

The Gremlins' first score came in the first quarter after a blocked Punxsy punt was recovered at the Chucks' 28-yard line. Two plays into the ensuing drive, the Gremlins scored on a 23-yard touchdown run and added a two-point conversion run to take an 8-0 lead.

BROCKWAY — In a District IX boys' soccer rematch of last year's championship game between the Punxsy Chucks and the Bradford Owls, the script looked very similar to 2010 with Punxsy scoring a first-half goal and Bradford answering with a second-half goal to send the game into overtime. This year, though, the Chucks were the ones who earned the overtime winner and took home the D-IX Championship trophy with a 2-1 win Wednesday night in Brockway.

The Zak Zone

Early Sunday afternoons this time of year, you can usually find me curled up nice and warm on the couch at my parents' house, preparing to watch the Steelers in the one o'clock round of NFL games.

Last Sunday, though, with the Steelers meeting the Patriots, the game was given a prime-time slot, and I instead found myself at work — well, sort of.

Brookville had been on the losing end of two one-goal games to the Lady Tide during the regular season, and it turned out the same way for the Lady Raiders Tuesday. Curwensville found the back of the net just once, but that was enough to carry the Lady Tide to the championship game.
