What a run: Dream season comes to an end

November 9, 2011

WEXFORD — The Punxsy boys' soccer team traveled to Wexford for the opening round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday evening, and despite falling 6-0 to the defending state champions, the Hampton Talbots, the Chucks gained valuable experience and put another notch in their program's belt.

Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle said he was proud of the way his team played, but said without seeing the level of competition at states it was hard to know what exactly to prepare for.

ONE LAST HOORAH FOR THE SENIORS

November 9, 2011

Tuesday night, the Punxsutawney Football 1st & 10 Club held a banquet to honor the football players and cheerleaders that participated in grades seven through 12 this season. The banquet gave the players, coaches and parents one final opportunity to honor the senior members especially. Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol thanked the seniors for all they've given to the program and for everything they've left behind for their teammates.

First to 10 wins! Defense dominates at tourney

November 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After offensive explosions ruled the first night of the elementary basketball tournament Monday, defense took center stage Tuesday, as in each of the five games, one team or the other was held to 10 points or fewer.

In the first contest of the evening, the fourth- and fifth-grade game between the Heat and the 76ers, stifling defense by the 76ers held the Heat to seven points and earn a 15-7 win.

Megan Ray scored seven points to lead the offensive attack for the 76ers, while Ally Whitman matched her total for leading scorer with seven for the Heat.

November 8, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A pair of first-half turnovers proved to be key in the Savage Seniors' victory over the Jaw-Dropping Juniors in Monday night's Powderpuff football game beneath the lights of Jack LaMarca Stadium in Punxsutawney.

Seniors Tori Martin and Cassie Cook each had first-half interceptions that led to touchdowns for the Senior squad and proved to be enough to hold off the Jaw-Droppers 24-8.

Look out states, here come the Chucks!

November 8, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last week at this time, the Chucks soccer team was preparing for a re-match with District-IX defending champion Bradford and the coaching staff was delivering the message every staff would deliver before a playoff game: Don't look past this game.

Well, the Chucks won that game in an overtime thriller over the Owls, and suddenly the focus switched to looking past the game and preparing for the state tournament, which kicks off tonight with a game against the defending state champion and reigning District-VII champion Hampton.

Scoring abounds on opening night of tourney

November 8, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Elementary Basketball Tournament is officially under way after a slate of five games was held Monday night in Punxsutawney.

In the sixth-grade contests, it became quite obvious that to win the tournament, teams will have to put up large numbers on the scoreboard, as the winning teams scored 32 and 28 points in the two games.

In the first game, between Penn State and Pitt, Kaitlyn Doverspike led the scoring with 12 points for Penn State and led her team to a 32-19 win.

Pitt's Kylie Lingenfelter was close behind in the scoring category with 10 points.

They came a long way: Lady Chucks take second

November 7, 2011

CLARION — Entering the final pool play match against the No. 1 seeded Lady Owls of Bradford, the Lady Chucks volleyball team wasn't sure which tie-breaker would be used if it could sweep the Lady Owls, but the squad knew it controlled its own destiny.

The Lady Chucks also knew the difficulty of the task ahead of them.

Bradford had handed Punxsy a three-game loss in the teams' only meeting this season, but Punxsy was a different, more-mature team this time around: A team with five consecutive wins under its belt and more experience behind its younger players.

Football rivals meet again

November 7, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Hosting an alumni game can only mean one thing: Rekindling a rivalry that has lasted for many years.

Punxsy hosted an alumni game between a foe from its past, the Brookville Raiders, and the Chucks settled the battle in a convincing 14-6 victory.

"This feels really great to come out on the winning side," Punxsy coach Tim Zimmerman said. "Because our high school team this year had a rough season, we really wanted to pull one together for them, and the alumni team did a fabulous job."

Running with the best of the state

November 7, 2011

HERSHEY — The conditions were nearly perfect Saturday when the Punxsy cross country teams traveled to Hershey for the PIAA Class AAA championship.

"I was happy the course was in good shape, and the weather was optimal since the district race was the complete opposite," Lady Chucks head coach George Wehrle said. "At least the girls were able to run their final race of the season with the chance of posting a decent time."

During the girls' race, Alexis Young was the first to cross the finish line for Punxsy. She completed the 3.1-mile course in 21:22 for 184th overall out of 285 runners.
