GIRLS' SOCCER TEAM SAYS, 'SO LONG, SENIORS'

November 17, 2011

The Punxsy girls' soccer team held its banquet Wednesday night at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. At the banquet, Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes thanked his senior players for their time on the team, wished them well and encouraged the players who weren't graduating to start thinking about what they could do to improve next year. Letter pins were presented to all players who earned them, and seniors were presented with warm-up jackets with their names on them as mementos. Pictured (from left) are seniors Alissa Vite, Sierra Milton, Kelsey Young, Cenneca Dilts and Tasha Story.

The past few days, I really haven't known what to do with myself.

With the boys' soccer team concluding their season with a trip to states and the volleyball team finishing second in a heated District IX championship game against Bradford — and congratulations to both teams — the PAHS fall sports season came to a screeching halt.

The girls' elementary basketball tournament tided me over last week, but with its conclusion last Thursday night, I found myself in a situation unfamiliar to me since I started working at The Spirit — a completely blank calendar for an entire week.

LOCAL BOXER EARNS WIN IN PITTSBURGH

November 16, 2011

Punxsy boxer Adam Littlejohn scored a decision win Nov. 3 at William Penn Hotel's Annual Boxing Show in downtown Pittsburgh. Littlejohn battled Larry Blakely, of Pittsburgh's Third Avenue Gym, in a 165-pound open-division bout. Blakely, a solid left-handed fighter, wasn't able to overcome Littlejohn's hand speed and defensive skills in the three-round match. With the win, Littlejohn improved to 26-12. Littlejohn and teammate Tahree Caroll were slated for action Dec. 3 at IUP's annual show in Indiana, but the event was recently cancelled.

The All-Star team was selected by coaches, who nominated their own players they thought deserved the honor. Then, all the District IX coaches voted to determine the team members. "Cassie and Sydney both had outstanding seasons, and they definitely deserved the votes," Punxsy head coach Lisa Kephart said. "They work very hard and have a great passion for volleyball."

Season-ending heartbreak for Brookville Raiders

November 14, 2011

CLARION — The Brookville Raiders' season came to a close Saturday after suffering a crushing 40-25 defeat at the hands of the Karns City Gremlins in the District IX Class AA semi-finals.

Following the game, the disappointment was easily seen on the face of Brookville head coach Chris Dworek, who said there were several mistakes made.

"We needed to tackle better, and the rush defense wasn't the best effort," Dworek said. "We can't fix things and get them next week; that's the brutality of the playoffs."

Last week, I wrote about the competitive nature of athletes coming together and celebrating the opportunity to play again against an old rival.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the game, but from what I heard, I missed a good, competitive game.

I was also told that the game got a bit chippy at times, but when the final horn rang, the teams came together in the ultimate show of respect: The mid-field handshake.
