Chucks look to come home with a win

September 29, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Once a year, the football game is more than a football game: It's Homecoming. Tonight is that night, when in addition to a larger crowd and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, the Chucks will take on the Karns City Gremlins in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"It's great excitement," Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol said of the homecoming atmosphere. "It's nice to have a big crowd up there, and we're so fortunate to be supported. There's always a nice crowd, and this just heightens it and makes it more enjoyable for the players."

'D' prevails as B'ville edges Punxsy, 1-0

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Raiders of Brookville travelled to Punxsy to take on the Lady Chucks soccer team Thursday afternoon, and although the muddy conditions from the hard rain earlier in the day equalized the playing field, Brookville came out on top with a 1-0 win.

"I think the field seemed to be a bit of an equalizer for us," Brookville head coach Chip Mason said after the game. "When we walked onto the field, we figured it'd be a game where we had to dump and run, because we just didn't think we could carry the ball very well on it."

BROCKWAY — The Lady Chucks golf team travelled to Brockway Thursday afternoon for a match they knew they would win before they even teed off, as Brockway's team fielded only three girls and was forced to forfeit.

Still, Punxsy head coach Katie Irwin saw lots of promising signs from her players on a course they were unfamiliar with.

"We had a great day," she said. "It was the first time we've ever seen the course at Scottish Heights, and they all played so well. The scores were down where we've wanted to see them all season."

Golf: It seems like such a simple game in its concept, doesn't it?

You take a club — quite the primitive term — and hit a ball, as in many other sports.

First, you usually hit it as far as you can. They call that the drive.

Then comes the approach, which usually means hitting it pretty hard, but not as hard as you can.

From start to finish, Punxsy earns a 'W'

September 27, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Already leading 3-0 at halftime, Punxsy scored three goals within 1:40 early in the second half to put the game away, and Punxsy cruised to an 8-0 win over Curwensville Tuesday in Punxsutawney.

It was a full squad effort for the Chucks, with the lineup looking a bit different in the first half than Punxsy is used to, giving the midfielders a chance to play defense and the fullbacks a chance to run the offense.

Everyone contributes in Lady Chucks win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks' volleyball team earned a three-game victory over DuBois Central Catholic, 25-14, 25-15, 25-20, Tuesday in Punxsutawney to push its record back to .500 at 4-4.

DCC kept the game very close in the first set, and Punxsy's lead was just three points at 16-13 before Cassie Cook went on a seven-point serving run that included kills by Sydney Weaver, Janie Depp-Hutchinson and Taylor Newcome and a solid block by Weaver.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's seventh- and eighth-grade girls' basketball teams faced off against Altoona-Maroon Tuesday in Punxsutawney, and the Lady Chucks' seventh-grade team defeated Altoona-Maroon 30-20.

"A total team effort by all ten of my Lady Chucks resulted in this extra special, feel-good win for them against Altoona," Punxsy head coach Darrin Kriebel said.

Altoona jumped out to an early 15-9 lead in the first half before Punxsy turned it on in the second to come back and secure the win.

Lady Chucks sweep 2nd home meet

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks' golf team hosted their second home meet of the season, and the end result was the same as the first meet, as Punxsy swept Brookville, Brockway, DuBois and Ridgway to improve to 14-0 on the season and 12-0 in AML play.

The Lady Chucks' team total was 223 — a whopping 38 strokes better than their closest competitor in Brookville.

As is normal for home meets, Punxsy was given a record of 4-0 for the host meet, and each team it played received one loss for the day.

Punxsy's low scorer was Lauren Giavedoni with a 54.

'D' is the key for Chucks in JV win

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Chucks' defense kept Clarion-Limestone's junior varsity squad without an offensive touchdown and the running game wore down the Lions' defense leading Punxsy to a 20-6, lightning-shortened win.

The lightning struck with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter with the Chucks inside the Lions' 30-yard line, and Limestone conceded the game to avoid the 30-minute delay.

The Lions received the opening kickoff and picked up two quick first downs, but a nice tackle by Christian Falgout stopped the Lions in their tracks and forced them to punt.

Things slip away at the end for Punxsy

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite only trailing 1-0 with 10 minutes to play Monday afternoon, the Lady Chucks' soccer team allowed three goals in the final 10 minutes against DCC, making the score look worse than it was and giving DCC a 4-0 win.

"Defensively, we looked good for most of the game, and then at the very end, we had girls getting tired," Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said. "When you're tired, you rely on the next wing to come out and help, but that wasn't happening tonight."

Hughes also said that a big part of the fatigue factor is mental fatigue.
