PUNXSUTAWNEY — After leading 3-1 at halftime, the Punxsy boys' soccer team scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half and went on to win 8-2 over DuBois Central Catholic.
"DuBois Central has a new coach and a few new players, and I really think they're on the verge of being a much better team this year," Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle said. "Fortunately, we came in with several returning starters and a decent bit of offensive firepower. It was nice to see my guys get some goals today."
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' volleyball team lost its home opener to Ridgway in three games Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.
Ridgway jumped out to an early 16-7 lead in the first game, forcing Punxsy to take a timeout.
Punxsy bounced back after the timeout, and Chelsea Engeholm went on a serving run. By the time it was over, Punxsy trailed by just four points, 18-14.
Ridgway answered back with a run of its own, though, and went on to take the first game, 25-18.
BROOKVILLE — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks soccer squad traveled through the rain Tuesday to take on Brookville in the Lady Raiders' first game of the season. Despite a strong second half start, Punxsy gave up three goals in the second half and ultimately lost 4-1.
Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said there were many positives he saw throughout the game.
"I thought we possessed the ball well at times; we passed well," Hughes said. "I'm happy with the intensity most of the game, but ... we need to be moving for the full 80 minutes."
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks volleyball squad headed to Slippery Rock Saturday to play in an all-day tournament. The Lady Chucks made it all the way to the semi-finals before being knocked off by Knoch.
The varsity squad began in pool play, playing each team to 25 twice.
It started with Karns City, which it beat 25-11 in the first game but then lost 25-21.
