Miners blank Brookville Grays, 1-0, in Game 1

ROSSITER — The Rossiter Miners topped the Brookville Grays, 1-0, Sunday in game one of the second round of the Federation League playoffs.

The Miners notched the second-seed in the league, guaranteeing themselves home-field advantage in their second round against the Grays.

The round is a best-of-seven series format, with the next game being played in Brookville Tuesday.

Both teams received a first-round bye.

The Miners recorded one run on just three hits throughout the ball game, but that, combined with impressive defense and pitching, was enough to win them the ball game.

Blose is star-of-show; Punxsy wins District title, 12-2

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's 10-& 11-year old baseball All-Stars are on a roll, and if manager Brad Gigliotti has things his way, the hits will just keep coming at Sectionals.

Punxsy defeated St. Marys 12-2 in four innings Thursday night in Punxsutawney to clinch the District 10 Championship and advance to the Section One tournament which will be held in Cranberry.

Punxsy's first game will be Thursday at 2 p.m. against McLane. The winner of the Section 1 tournament will move on to the state tournament in Latrobe.

Barenchick, Mesoraco voted Spirit spring MVPs

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The votes have been counted and recounted, and your voices have been heard. The 2011 Spirit Spring Sports MVPs are Ashley Barenchik and Jordan Mesoraco.

The Spirit received a record-breaking number of votes in comparison to the number received for the fall and winter competitions.

Eight-hundred and forty-two votes were recorded for the female MVP voting, and 922 were recorded for the male voting.

Barenchik won the female portion in a landslide, receiving 458 votes, 54 percent of the overall total, from Spirit readers.

Mesoraco shines in Futures All-Star showcase

PHOENIX — Punxsutawney native Devin Mesoraco was granted the opportunity to showcase his talent in two different All-Star showcases over the past four days, and he did everything he could to impress on the national stage.

Mesoraco played in the nationally-televised MLB XM Futures All-Star game Sunday night in Phoenix, a game that highlights the top prospects in all divisions of Minor League Baseball. Mesoraco was granted the start at catcher for the U.S. team, which won 6-4.

Mesoraco shined brightly in the game, going 1-for-1, scoring a run and being hit by a pitch his second at-bat.

DuBois wins District behind Henry's shutout

DUBOIS — DuBois pitcher Rachel Henry threw a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out eight, to defeat Punxsy 5-0 in the District 10 championship in the Junior League Softball division Wednesday night in DuBois.

Henry allowed two of the three hits in the first two innings and seemed to throw better as the game went on, allowing only one more hit on a come-backer that she just could not handle in the seventh.

Home runs abound in Punxsy loss to Brookville, 10-8

BROOKVILLE — Punxsutawney 11-and-12 year olds were beaten, 10-8, at the hands of Brookville Team Skittlez Wednesday night despite a late sixth-inning rally.

Down 10-5 and with two outs, Punxsy's Brandon Matthews hit a three-run homer to right field, cutting Brookville's lead to just two. But Brookville's relief pitcher Ben Reitz remained calm and struck out the next batter, ending the game for Punxsy.

Punxsy will drop to the losers' bracket of the Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament taking place this week in Brookville.

Punxsutawney had three home runs, while Brookville hit two.

Punxsy plays tonight after extra-inning win

ST. MARYS — With St. Marys one out from a victory, Punxsy's Alyssa Reitz belted a two-out RBI double to drive in Ivy Phillips and tie the score at three in a game that Punxsy would go on to win 7-3 in eight innings in Junior League softball All-Star action Monday night in St. Marys.

Punxsy advanced to a rematch with DuBois in the bracket final for the District 10 championship with the win. Punxsy will need to win two games, as it is coming out of the losers' bracket.

DUBOIS — Punxsy's Post 62 Senior Legion baseball team's season came to a disappointing end with a 6-4 loss against DuBois in the winner-take-all championship game Tuesday night at Showers Field in DuBois.

Punxsy manager Doug Mesoraco was proud of his players and the way they battled, though, not only Tuesday, but throughout the six years that he has been working with them.

Punxsy tops Luigi's DuBois in Brookville tourney, 10-4

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy 9-and-10 year olds took down Luigi's DuBois in round one of the Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament Tuesday in Brookville.

Punxsy's Willie Hoover went 3-for-3 from the plate with two doubles and three RBIs, leading his team's offense to victory.

Logan Johnston also had two doubles with three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at bat, and the team totaled eleven hits.

"I was impressed with everyone's play," Punxsy manager Mark Ewing said. "Everyone contributed really well."

Punxsy will take on the winner of the Franklin/ElCo II (St. Marys) game at 6 p.m. today in Brookville.

Punxsy taken down by Brookville in four innings, 16-3

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Area Little League Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament began Monday. The tournament features nine 9-and-10 year old teams and seven 11-and-12 year old teams from around the district.

In the first round, Punxsutawney 9-and-10 year olds faced Williams/Servco (Brookville) and were ousted. They fell 16-3 in four innings.

Brookville acted as the away team during Monday night's game and gained an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first.
