DUBOIS — Kevin Gnacinski pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, and the DuBois Rockets beat the approaching storm clouds to win Game 3 of the Federation League championship over the Rossiter Miners, 3-0, Thursday night in DuBois.
With the win, DuBois took a 3-0 series lead, and needs just one more victory to clinch the championship for the second straight season.
Rossiter's inability to muster up any offense frustrated manager Rick Matthews.
CURWENSVILLE — Punxsy's 15- and 16-year old VFW Teener League All-Stars scored 10 runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back, cruising to a 15-5 victory in five innings over Curwensville Wednesday night in Curwensville.
With the victory, Punxsy clinched a berth to the state championships, which will be held Aug. 5-8 in Huntingdon, but Punxsy still has one game to play in the round-robin tournament before it begins practicing for States.
ROSSITER — The DuBois Rockets batted around twice and scored 13 runs in the top of the third inning and held off a late Rossiter Miners push to win the second game of the Federation League championship series, 14-9, and take a 2-0 series lead Wednesday night at Shaffer Field in Rossiter.
Punxsy's 13- and 14-year old VFW Teener League All-Star team. Punxsy will host the State Tournament this weekend, beginning Friday. There will be four games Friday, including Punxsy's game at 7 p.m. There will be an opening ceremony Friday at 6:45 p.m. at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field with the presentation of the flag by the Jefferson County Color Guard. Ruben Taylor, Kuntz's great-nephew, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Tournament action kicks off at 10 a.m. Friday, and runs through the championship game Monday.
