BROOKVILLE â€” The Brookville Area Little League Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament began Monday. The tournament features nine 9-and-10 year old teams and seven 11-and-12 year old teams from around the district.
In the first round, Punxsutawney 9-and-10 year olds faced Williams/Servco (Brookville) and were ousted. They fell 16-3 in four innings.
Brookville acted as the away team during Monday night's game and gained an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first.
ST. MARYS â€” "I've never seen anything like it," Punxsy manager Brad Gigliotti said after his team scored 21 runs in the first two innings of its game against king-seed St. Marys, rolling to a 21-3 victory in four innings in 10-&11-year old baseball All-Star action Monday night in St. Marys.
Punxsy, which was the home team, jumped out to a quick start defensively, forcing a groundout by the leadoff hitter and turning a double play after allowing the second runner to reach base safely.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Despite notching only three hits in six trips to the plate, Punxsy's 13- and 14-year old sPunxsy VFW All-Star team took advantage of six walks by Clearfield pitchers to score six runs and win 6-2 in the opening game of its round-robin tournament Monday night in Punxsutawney.
DUBOIS â€” The DuBois Post 17 American Legion baseball team scored five runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings of Sunday afternoon's game against Punxsy Post 62,.
The final score was 15-3, and the game ended in five innings via the 12-run rule at Showers Field in DuBois.
"We didn't bring the same intensity as we did the other day, that's for sure," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "Maybe it was a let down. I don't know, I really can't explain it. They hit the ball well, and we didn't. We just didn't show up."
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Already leading 9-5, Punxsy's 10-&11-year old All-Stars brought 14 hitters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and doubled its run total on the way to an 18-5 victory over DuBois Saturday in Punxsutawney.
"Everything carried over from up in Warren like I had hoped it would, especially at the plate," Punxsy manager Brad Gigliotti said.
Nine of the first 10 batters that Punxsy brought to the plate in the fifth inning reached base via base hits.
Carl Medsger led off the inning with a double off of DuBois relief pitcher Doran Walker.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Punxsy's Junior League softball All-Stars batted around in three of the four innings that it came to the plate en route to a 14-0 victory in five innings over Ridgway in Punxsutawney on Saturday.
Punxsy was the home team, so it did not have to bat in the fifth inning because of the ten-run rule.
With the win, Punxsy advances in the losers' bracket and will play St. Marys today at 6 p.m. Ridgway was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
