Punxsy grad Gillung chosen in 19th round by St. Louis

June 7, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Nick Gillung, a 2007 Punxsutawney Area High School graduate, kept an eye on the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday just in case any of the athletes he played with on summer teams were selected.

Little did he know, his own name would come onto his computer screen in the 19th round.

Chucks pound Hampton, advance to state's Elite Eight

June 7, 2011

BROCKWAY — The Chucks have had a recent history of receiving big games in the state playoffs from unlikely heroes.

In 2007, No. 6 hitter Alex Cressley went 4-for-4 and drove home the game-winning run during a 3-2 victory in eight innings over undefeated West Allegheny in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. In the state title game that year, No. 9 hitter David Pisano hit a game-tying triple with two outs in the seventh inning, and he later scored the winning run to propel the Chucks to the state championship.

The Walk Talk Ten

1. It was great to see Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League President Harry Noerr laughing and smiling as he talked to people at the Lady Chucks' district title game last Wednesday in Brockway. Noerr's daughter, Lisa, a 1995 PAHS graduate, passed away a few weeks ago, and I'm sure that brought much sadness to he and his extended family. For those who aren't aware, the Punxsy varsity softball and Little League softball field next to the concession stand is named Harry Noerr Field.
