Spirit readers get to pick Spring Sports MVPs

June 13, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With more than 3,500 votes counted for The Punxsutawney Spirit's first-ever 2010-2011 Fall and Winter Sports Male and Female Most Valuable Players, the public will now have an opportunity to choose the initial 2011 Spring Sports Male and Female Most Valuable Players.

Two athletes have been chosen from each of Punxsy's five spring sports: Baseball, boys' tennis, boys' track and field, girls' track and field and softball.

Readers will have a chance to decide one boy among six and one girl among four to create one winner for each gender.

1. Although both the Punxsy baseball and softball teams fell a few wins short of a state title, the success of the teams they lost to year after year is astounding. The Lady Chucks lost to Valley, which just reached the state final Monday after Caitlyn Neeler threw a no-hitter during a 1-0 victory over Bellefonte in the semifinals. Neeler held Punxsy to just two hits — both by senior Kristen Fedder — during a 1-0 win. The Chucks lost 6-1 to Northern York last week, and the Polar Bears are in the final, too, after they upset undefeated WPIAL Champion Elizabeth Forward, 6-4.
