MESORACO WATCH

April 23, 2011

Devin Mesoraco, a 2007 baseball state champion at Punxsutawney Area High School, struggled during the second week of his Class AAA season with the Louisville Bats, managing three hits in 18 at-bats.

The Bats didn't do much better, going 2-4 during that span before witnessing a rainout Friday against the Columbus Clippers.

Mesoraco's average dipped to .256 in this young season after a 3-for-18 (.167) week. He still reached base in four of the five games he played this week.

Lady Chucks come from behind to beat DuBois, 6-4

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy softball team lost three regular-season games last year, and two of them were to DuBois.

This season, an 0-2 record against the Lady Beavers just wasn't going to fly for the Lady Chucks.

Punxsy (5-0) overcame a 4-1 deficit, tied the game in the fourth inning and pulled ahead for good during a 6-4 victory over DuBois (3-1) in a battle of undefeated District IX powerhouses Thursday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.

BROCKWAY — The Punxsy boys' tennis team bounced back from Wednesday's 6-3 loss in DuBois with a 9-0 victory Thursday in Brockway to even its record at 3-3.

A constant line that Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley mentioned was his team's ability to respond to various situations Thursday after struggling Wednesday.

"(This win is) a big confidence builder," Heigley said. "We made the adjustments at the right time. We didn't make as many mistakes that we've had in previous matches."

BROOKVILLE — Brookville shortstop Kelsey Heinrich and third baseman Abby Beatty shut down the left side of the infield during the Lady Raiders' 7-3 win over Karns City Thursday afternoon in Brookville.

Heinrich and Beatty gunned down eight Lady Gremlins base runners, helping Tonya Shaffer complete a one-hitter, which gave Shaffer her second varsity win.

"I'm proud that we didn't give up," Henrich said, "And that we fought back and won even though we were behind for 90 percent of the game."

DUBOIS — The Punxsy boys' tennis team fell behind during numerous matches and was unable to come back to win during DuBois' 6-3 victory Wednesday in DuBois.

Only two Chucks were victorious Wednesday — Mike Blose and Tim Pearce. Both players won a singles match and teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles contest.

Altoona rallies to top Chucks in extras, 7-5

April 19, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ahead 5-1 through four innings, the Punxsy baseball team was unable to score again and couldn't preserve the lead during a 7-5 loss in nine innings to Altoona Monday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.

Punxsy (4-2) surrendered four runs in the fifth inning and two in the ninth. Once Altoona pitcher Jason Douglas entered the game in the fourth inning, the Chucks' bats faltered.

"We gave this game away," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said, "and we just didn't pitch well with the lead."

Depp, potent offense power Punxsy to 4-0 start

April 19, 2011

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Nine girls had a hit, and starting pitcher Randa Depp gave up one run through the first five innings Monday during the Punxsy softball team's 8-5 victory in Hollidaysburg.

The Lady Chucks are off to a 4-0 start behind an offense that hit up and down the lineup and a pitcher who didn't give up much early in the game.

Depp, a junior, was impressive during a complete-game effort that included nine strikeouts. She allowed five runs on six hits with one walk, but the Lady Golden Tigers didn't score their second run until the Lady Chucks were ahead 8-1 through 5 1/2-innings.

Lady Raiders score often to win first game

BROOKVILLE — After using about 10 bags of sand, three-and-a-half hours and 24 runs scored, the Brookville softball team picked up its first win of the season by beating Clarion-Limestone 15-9 Monday.

The game featured two rain delays, a cascade of errors and sloppy field conditions, but Lady Raiders coach Earl Ross was happy with his team's production.

"We've gotten a lot better with base running, and our hitting is starting to come around," Ross said. "Every game they've improved, and they did really well today."
