PUNXSUTAWNEY — After witnessing the Punxsy varsity baseball team's 12-run first inning during its 16-1 win in four innings over Kittanning Tuesday, it was easy to reminisce about a similarly successful first inning that came from the 2008 Punxsutawney Junior Legion team, which featured a number of this year's varsity Chucks.
ST. MARYS — Nineteen Punxsy girls scored at least a point during the Lady Chucks' track and field team's 76 1/2-73 1/2 victory over Elk County Catholic Tuesday in St. Marys.
The Lady Crusaders are one of the premier Class AA programs in District IX, and first-year head coach Barry Young was proud of his team's season-opening win.
"It was a quality win over a quality opponent," Young said. "Spreading those third-place finishes around really helped."
Punxsy (1-0) won two of three relays and earned seven first-place finishes in individual events.
ST. MARYS — The Punxsy boys' track and field team won five of the seven field events during a 83-67 victory over Elk County Catholic Tuesday in St. Marys.
"We did what we had to do early in the season," Punxsy head coach John Smith said. "It was a close meet, as we expected, and we did well despite the cold weather."
Punxsy was dominant in the field, led by junior Brody Morgan, who won all three throwing events.
Morgan took first in the discus (117-2), javelin (141-9) and shot put (46-3 1/2).
