Elementary tourney starts with many close games

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney elementary boys' basketball tournament commenced with a number of tight finishes Monday night at PAHS Gym A.

In five games featuring fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, four match-ups finished with two points or fewer separating the two teams.

Michigan State 11, North Carolina 10

Matt Wehrle's game-high eight points led Michigan State to an 11-10 victory over North Carolina in the first fourth- and fifth-grade contest of the night.

Also scoring for Michigan State (1-0) were Logan Geist (two points) and Carter Newcome (one).
