PUNXSUTAWNEY — A pair of first-half turnovers proved to be key in the Savage Seniors' victory over the Jaw-Dropping Juniors in Monday night's Powderpuff football game beneath the lights of Jack LaMarca Stadium in Punxsutawney.
Seniors Tori Martin and Cassie Cook each had first-half interceptions that led to touchdowns for the Senior squad and proved to be enough to hold off the Jaw-Droppers 24-8.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last week at this time, the Chucks soccer team was preparing for a re-match with District-IX defending champion Bradford and the coaching staff was delivering the message every staff would deliver before a playoff game: Don't look past this game.
Well, the Chucks won that game in an overtime thriller over the Owls, and suddenly the focus switched to looking past the game and preparing for the state tournament, which kicks off tonight with a game against the defending state champion and reigning District-VII champion Hampton.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Elementary Basketball Tournament is officially under way after a slate of five games was held Monday night in Punxsutawney.
In the sixth-grade contests, it became quite obvious that to win the tournament, teams will have to put up large numbers on the scoreboard, as the winning teams scored 32 and 28 points in the two games.
In the first game, between Penn State and Pitt, Kaitlyn Doverspike led the scoring with 12 points for Penn State and led her team to a 32-19 win.
Pitt's Kylie Lingenfelter was close behind in the scoring category with 10 points.
