CLARION — Entering the final pool play match against the No. 1 seeded Lady Owls of Bradford, the Lady Chucks volleyball team wasn't sure which tie-breaker would be used if it could sweep the Lady Owls, but the squad knew it controlled its own destiny.
The Lady Chucks also knew the difficulty of the task ahead of them.
Bradford had handed Punxsy a three-game loss in the teams' only meeting this season, but Punxsy was a different, more-mature team this time around: A team with five consecutive wins under its belt and more experience behind its younger players.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Hosting an alumni game can only mean one thing: Rekindling a rivalry that has lasted for many years.
Punxsy hosted an alumni game between a foe from its past, the Brookville Raiders, and the Chucks settled the battle in a convincing 14-6 victory.
"This feels really great to come out on the winning side," Punxsy coach Tim Zimmerman said. "Because our high school team this year had a rough season, we really wanted to pull one together for them, and the alumni team did a fabulous job."
HERSHEY — The conditions were nearly perfect Saturday when the Punxsy cross country teams traveled to Hershey for the PIAA Class AAA championship.
"I was happy the course was in good shape, and the weather was optimal since the district race was the complete opposite," Lady Chucks head coach George Wehrle said. "At least the girls were able to run their final race of the season with the chance of posting a decent time."
During the girls' race, Alexis Young was the first to cross the finish line for Punxsy. She completed the 3.1-mile course in 21:22 for 184th overall out of 285 runners.
