PUNXSUTAWNEY â The SS.C.D. elementary basketball program's sixth-grade team finished its season with an undefeated 26-0 record with three wins at the sixth-grade tournament at DuBois Central Catholic over the weekend in DuBois.
The final game "was a nail-biter," according to elementary basketball director Kurt Nestel. SS.C.D. held on for a 13-12 victory over Elk County Christian to clinch the undefeated season.
During the perfect season, SS.C.D. also earned the championship at the ECC Tourna-ment.
DUBOIS â Halloween turned out to be a scary night for the Brookville Raiders as they fell 5-1 to the Brockway Rovers in the Distrist IX Class A soccer semi-finals.
With the loss, the Raiders season ended on a disappointing note, but Brookville head coach Dan Smith said he was pleased with how the team played throughout the playoffs.
"We would've liked to have gone a little further up the bracket, but we're happy," Smith said. "We're proud of the boys, with the effort they put up through the bracket. They gave it a nice run."

RIDGWAY â The Punxsutawney boys' cross country was upset by St. Marys Saturday at the District IX Cross Country Championships in Ridgway. Punxsy attempted to challenge for the district title, but it ended up taking the runner-up position after falling to the Flying Dutch.
The AAA boys had to deal with seriously muddy conditions as they were the final runners on the Ridgway course at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
RIDGWAY â The Punxsy girls cross country staged a valiant effort under miserable conditions Saturday at the District 9 Championships in Ridgway, falling just six points short of an upset as they placed second overall to team champion Bradford.
Punxsy finished with 38 points behind Bradfordâs 32 but well ahead of DuBoisâ total of 67. Clearfield placed fourth with 83 points.

BROOKVILE â After winning the Route 36 Rivalry Trophy two years ago and retaining it last year, the Chucks football squad was forced to part ways with it Friday night in Brookville after falling victim to the Raiders' powerful, balanced running attack, 27-14.

DUBOIS â The Lady Chucks' volleyball team ended its season on a high note â winning five in a row to lock up the second seed in the District IX playoffs â with a convincing three-game sweep of the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals, 25-11, 25-5, 25-11, Thursday night in DuBois.
"It was nice to see everyone getting stats this match," Punxsy head coach Lisa Kephart said of her team's all-around effort. "The girls played well tonight and had fun. Our serving was really tough, as we only missed four serves the entire match."
DUBOIS â On a frigid night in DuBois, Punxsy kicked off the opening round of the District IX Class AA boys' soccer playoffs with a 5-1 win over St. Marys during which Ty Zimmerman and Tyler Presloid each scored a pair of goals, and Tanner Evans added another.
BROOKVILLE â Coming off a four-game skid, the Punxsy Chucks football team hopes to bounce back as it heads into the Route 36 Rivalry game tonight against the Raiders in Brookville. But the Chucks' spirits aren't broken, according to Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The SS.C.D. girls' elementary basketball teams have found their stride and continue to frustrate teams with their defense, as both the fifth- and sixth-grade teams earned a pair of victories over Marion Center last Tuesday and North Clarion Catholic Sunday in Punxsutawney.
The sixth-grade team's defense shined the brightest against Marion Center, allowing a total of just three points, and the fifth-grade squad showed its defensive prowess Sunday by holding NCC to six points.
STRATTANVILLE â Braxton Giavedoni took the first play from scrimmage 80 yards for a touchdown run, and Punxsy's defense kept up its rugged reputation by holding a shutout deep into the fourth quarter in the Punxsy ninth-grade football team's 34-8 win over Clarion-Limestone Wednesday in Strattanville.
Kaleb Young also returned a kickoff after C-L's only touchdown for a 72-yard score, wrapping up the three-pronged attack by Punxsy's offense, defense and special teams.
