Bobcats' defense outduels Punxsy's

October 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy Chucks trailed by six at halftime, and the defense came out and forced the Clarion Bobcats into three consecutive three-and-outs to begin the second half, but the Bobcats' defense stopped the Chucks offense twice inside the 10-yard line to shut the Chucks out in the second half and earn a 19-7 win Friday night in Punxsutawney.

Because of Punxsy's shutdown defense, the Chucks outdid Clarion on the stat sheet, but the Bobcats bend-but-don't-break style of defense came through for them in the end.

Strong second half leads Raiders to win

BROOKVILLE — The passing game was questionable for the Brookville Raiders during the first half, as quarterback Steve Kennedy was 3-for-10. But in the second half, Kennedy found his arm and his target — Sebastian Kerr — and the two led Brookville to a convincing 37-13 victory over the Clarion-Limestone Lions Friday night in Brookville.

The Lions played arguably their best half of football this season, and Brookville had only a 15-13 lead at halftime.

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy running back Perry Arrington led his team to victory as he scored two touchdowns, including a 96-yard interception return with 30 seconds left in the game, and the Chucks' ninth-grade squad beat the Brookville Raiders, 12-0 Wednesday night on Brookville's home field.

"(Perry) has had some big plays this year," Punxsy head coach Jason Grusky said following the game. "He's been a leader, and we expect big plays from him, and he delivered again today as he has most of the year."

The Zak Zone

Today marks the beginning of a very important season to me: Hockey season.

Although, I will admit that last week's chilly temperatures and rain/snowy mix came a little too early, it's never too early for hockey season to begin.

Hockey is a special sport for me as I grew up playing the indoor version on roller skates.

Yes, I said roller skates, not those silly in-lines that came along much later, but good old-fashioned roller skates.

The majority of my free time, and the majority of my parents' vacation funds, was poured into this hobby.

Perfect season continues Lady Chucks win District-IX Title

October 4, 2011

KANE — After another convincing victory Tuesday in Kane, the Lady Chucks' golf team is still undefeated, but Tuesday's victory was a bit sweeter than the first 16, as Tuesday's win meant Punxsy was the District IX champion.

"We've had our hopes set on this win all season, but we knew going into today's match that we would have some serious competition," Punxsy head coach Katie Irwin said. "The course has some very tricky holes, and Kane had a definite advantage playing on their own course. But our girls played smart, focused rounds and deserved the win."

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's boys' cross country team hosted Kane and DuBois Central Catholic for a three-team meet Tuesday afternoon and in mucky conditions, the Chucks prevailed over both visiting squads.

In both meets, Punxsy had several runners between its fifth-place finisher and its opponents' final finishers, displacing the points so that Punxsy earned a 22-37 win over Kane and a 16-47 victory over DCC.

Punxsy's Dane Baker was the first-place finisher in the meet with a time of 18:02.

In the first set, Punxsy jumped out to an early lead behind a good hit by junior hitter Sydney Weaver, but the Lady Owls bounced back with some impressive hitting of their own to take a three-point lead.

Marion Center stings the Lady Chucks

October 4, 2011

MARION CENTER — Marion Center's girls' volleyball team defeated the Lady Chucks in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-22, behind strong serving and hitting from senior Kristen Yeomans.

Yeomans' serve was kryptonite to Punxsy's returners as she served a seven-point streak in the first set, a seven-point streak in the second and an eight-point streak in the third and deciding set.

Each run came early in the game, giving the Lady Stingers some breathing room in the contest. Without Yeomans' streaks, the sets would have been very close from start to finish.

Eighth grade dominates final quarter to earn win

October 4, 2011

ST. MARYS — The Lady Chucks eighth-grade team basketball team outscored St. Marys 13-6 in the final quarter of Monday afternoon's game in St. Marys to earn a 31-14 win.

"All the girls played well in the second half to help us pull away," Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said. "After St. Marys cut it to six point in the fourth quarter, the girls executed perfectly."

Punxsy's scoring was led by Hope Bridge, who scored 15 points. Bridge was followed by Emma White, who scored eight.
