The Zak Zone

October 26, 2011

Over the past two weeks, I had the opportunity to attend a plethora of Senior Nights for the sports of boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' cross country, volleyball, cheerleading, band and football, and one thing stood out about the seniors who represent Punxsutawney via athletics: These kids have heart.

Not every Senior Night went as those who plan these things would have probably liked.

Lady Chucks finding momentum at the right time

October 26, 2011

NEW BETHLEHEM — Despite falling in their first set against Redbank Valley, the Lady Chucks bounced back to win three straight sets and earn a four-game victory — their fourth in victory in a row — 22-25, 25-14, 28-26, 25-22, in New Bethlehem Monday.

The junior varsity squad stayed true to form and won its matchup with the Lady Bulldogs in two sets, 25-14, 25-16.

In the varsity game, it was the Lady Bulldogs who earned the first set victory, edging out Punxsy in a back-and-forth contest, 25-22.

Archery season kicked off Oct. 1 across the state; muzzleloader season started Oct. 15; and traditional rifle season is slated to begin Nov. 28, the Monday after Thanksgiving. (Photo submitted)

Underdogs shut out third-seeded Ridgway

October 26, 2011

RIDGWAY — Labeled as the underdog heading into Tuesday's playoff game may have been an advantage for the Lady Raiders. Keeping focused and playing hard for the full 80 minutes proved to be the key, and Brookville advanced to the District IX Class A semi-finals after a 1-0 shutout victory over the Lady Elkers of Ridgway.

"Like I told my girls after the game, I'm not sure that maybe the best team won, but I know that the team that had the most heart did today," Lady Raiders head coach Chip Mason said. "I was very happy with the effort they put forth."

Split down the middle: One win, one loss

October 24, 2011

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks' seventh-grade team played a competitive game against Hollidaysburg Monday and came out the victors, 28-24.

The eighth-grade team, on the other hand, was not so lucky and suffered a 33-11 defeat.

For the seventh-grade team, the scoring was led by Morgan VanLeer, who notched an impressive 14 points, accounting for half of her team's offensive power.

The game was a shootout for both teams, and Hollidaysburg was up by just two points after the first quarter, but the Lady Chucks came out strong and were leading 12-11 at halftime.

Long's four-goal game leads Raiders to victory

October 24, 2011

BROOKVILLE — All the Brookville Raiders really needed Monday was striker Wyatt Long's hat trick, but Long added another on top of that and helped lead his team to a dominating 7-2 victory over DuBois Central Catholic in the first round of the District IX Class A boys' soccer playoffs.

"Wyatt has just been more than what we could've asked for the whole way through the second half (of the season)," Brookville head coach Dan Smith said. "We've just continued to build his offensive skill set from a guy that has run wing the last three years."

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Punxsy girls' cross country team traveled to Slippery Rock last Thursday to take part in the Tri-State Track Coaches Association (TSTCA) championship meet held at the Cooper’s Lake Cross Country Course, and despite miserable conditions, the girls performed well, taking 23rd place out of 57 teams.

Lady Chucks keep rolling with wins over Bradford

October 23, 2011

BRADFORD — The Lady Chucks relied on solid defense again, with both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams holding the Bradford Lady Owls to 20 and 18 points, respectively, in a pair of wins Friday in Bradford.

Just because they played well defensively doesn't mean they weren't playing well from the other side of the ball, though.

In the eighth-grade game, Hope Bridge led the way in the scoring category with 16 points, nearly out-scoring the Lady Owls herself en route to a 30-18 victory.

Bulldogs pounce, Punxsy falls on Sr. Night

October 22, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Redbank Valley scored six first-half touchdowns and held the Chucks scoreless in the first half en route to a 42-12 victory on Punxsy's Senior Night Friday in Punxsy.

"The thing is, we knew Redbank Valley had a lot of speed, but knowing it and containing it are two different things," Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol said. "The past two weeks have been a bit disjointed for us with injuries and moving guys around. You have to be improving this time of year, and we haven't been able to do that."
