PUNXSUTAWNEY — While Punxsy's varsity volleyball team defeated the Curwensville Lady Tide Tuesday night in Punxsutawney, the junior varsity team picked up a victory of its own in two games, 25-20, 25-13.
Punxsy was strong at the net, which has become a regular occurrence, both offensively and defensively.
Nicole DiPietro had three kills in the first game, and Bella Gallina picked up a block.
Punxsy's serving has been a strong suit all year, and Tuesday, Alyssa Reitz and Ivy Phillips each had four aces in the first game to continue the trend.
DUBOIS — The DuBois Beavers ninth-grade football team took advantage of an early Punxsy turnover and a quick three-and-out on the Chucks' second drive to score twice in the first four minutes of the game, and the Beavers' defense pitched a shutout as DuBois went on to win 54-0.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Punxsy started its first drive at its own 35-yard line, but fumbled on the first play, and DuBois took over at the 24.
DuBois running back Devin Clark opened the game for the Beavers with a 14-yard run for a first down.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a pair of full-team efforts, the Lady Chucks middle school basketball teams each defeated the Lady Raiders of Brookville Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy's eighth-graders trailed 4-2 after the first quarter, but outscored Brookville 11-3 in the second and never looked back, going on to win 30-19.
While everyone didn't score for the eighth-grade squad, every team member played a contributing role, Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said.
