October 17, 2011

ST. MARYS — The Lady Chucks junior varsity volleyball team traveled to the home of the Elk County Catholic Crusaders for their volleyball tournament Saturday and put on an impressive show. Punxsy went 11-1 in pool play and finished second overall in the tournament.

The Lady Chucks opened pool play against Redbank earning two close victories, 25-20, 25-20. Punxsy head coach Megan Decker said it was a "sleepy, early game," and her team members didn't communicate as much as they usually do, but they did finish strong to earn the win.

ST. MARYS — The Lady Chucks tennis team met the Lady Beavers of DuBois Monday afternoon in blustery conditions at Benzinger Park in St. Marys for the District IX team championship, and DuBois won 5-0 to earn the title.

Despite the loss, Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius was happy with finishing second in the district and saw great improvement in her team throughout the year, especially since DuBois handed the Lady Chucks a 9-0 loss in their first match of the season.

DUBOIS — Punxsy's seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams played well on both sides of the ball again, using solid defense and consistent scoring from a variety of players to earn a pair of wins against the Lady Beavers in DuBois Monday afternoon.

In the eighth-grade game, Punxsy led 21-10 after three quarters and held off a late rally by DuBois to win 24-17.

"The girls played really well," Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said after the game. "Our man-to-man defense was the best it's been all season."
