PUNXSUTAWNEY — Whenever one team appeared to put a stronghold on Friday night's girls' basketball game, the other squad was ready to make a run.
After a 9-0 run put Punxsy ahead 21-13 during the second quarter, Bradford's 21-2 surge during the next 10 minutes helped the Lady Owls leap ahead 34-23.
What followed was the Lady Chucks' game-ending 25-9 burst during a 48-43 victory.
BRADFORD — The Punxsy boys' basketball team held Bradford under 50 points, and junior Logan Weaver scored 17 points, but the Chucks couldn't score as a team during a 44-27 loss to the Owls Friday night.
The Chucks (4-8, 0-5 District IX League) trailed 18-15 at halftime before being outscored 26-12 during the second half of another league defeat.
Bradford improved 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Weaver had 12 of Punxsy's 15 first-half points. He added 11 rebounds (four offensive) for the double-double.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Filling nearly every weight class has benefitted the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team all season, and Wednesday night against Redbank Valley was no different, as the Chucks earned a 72-13 victory at home.
Punxsy would have won 36-13 on the mat if not for six forfeits, but with those easy wins, it registered the 59-point win. The Chucks (11-1) all but clinched their 11th-straight victory by scoring the first 36 points of the match.
BROOKVILLE — Senior wrestler Dylan Buffington temporarily lost his confidence Thursday night after he was taken down by St. Marys' Ben Cheatle in the first period of their 160-pound bout.
Buffington doesn’t wrestle varsity much, but it didn’t show, as he didn’t panic, reversed Cheatle, and ended up scoring a pin before the end of the first period to earn his first win of the season. Buffington earned the Clint Puller award for outstanding wrestler of the match.
It was the first time he won a Puller Award for wrestling. He previously won one for track and field.
