PUNXSUTAWNEY — Being competitive hasn't been enough for the Punxsy boys' basketball team, as even though it kept things close with District IX League-leading St. Marys Tuesday night, the Chucks suffered their 17th-straight league loss, 52-45.
Punxsy (4-7, 0-4 District IX League) trailed by just two points with 1:28 left before St. Marys (10-3, 4-1) inbounded the ball to Jimmy Werner, who quickly finished under the basket. Werner's hoop started the Flying Dutchmen's game-winning 5-0 run that finished off the Chucks.
BROOKVILLE — With the dual meet victory already secured, it would have been easy for the Raiders' Logan Stout to continue to take his lumps as DuBois 215-pounder Landon Hannah continued to earn points seemingly at will.
Someone forgot to tell Stout that the match was over.
Trailing 9-2 in the third period, Stout pulled off an improbable maneuver to gain control of the match before pinning Hannah in a stunner, highlighting an all-around impressive night of wrestling for Brookville, as the Raiders earned a 52-21 win over DuBois in front of the home crowd.
SENECA — A year after finishing second-best, the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team won the Cranberry Team Duals Saturday.
Punxsy was dominant all day, beating Oil City (76-18), Franklin (62-19), Greenville (55-37) and Warren (69-24) while completing the tournament with a 4-0 record.
Bonus points were the key to Punxsy's victory Saturday, as it won 22 bouts by fall.
