ST. MARYS — The Punxsy eighth-grade boys' basketball team couldn't hold onto a 26-24 lead late in the fourth quarter during a 31-26 loss to Elk County Catholic Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Punxsy (5-2) was up 26-24 when the Crusaders converted two times to jump ahead 28-26 with about a minute remaining. After ECC added another free throw to go up 29-26, a Punxsy turnover led to ECC taking a two-possession lead and clinching the victory.
BROOKVILLE — In a night full of forfeits with the outcome nearly determined before it started, Wednesday night's varsity wrestling match between Brookville and Brockway featured six bouts in total, with both teams claiming three.
The Raiders (3-0), in front of a "White Out" crowd in Brookville, benefitted from six forfeits, a pin fall victory and a technical fall to easily pick up a 50-24 victory over the Rovers.
ST. MARYS — As has been an issue for the Punxsy boys' basketball team for a few years now, a quarter-long scoring drought cost the team an opportunity at keeping up with Elk County Catholic Tuesday night during a 52-33 loss on the road.
Punxsy (3-6, 0-3 District IX League) was ahead 9-2 midway through the first quarter, but then, it couldn't find the bottom of the net.
Twelve minutes and five points scored later, the Chucks were behind 21-14 at halftime before being outpaced 31-19 during the second half of their fourth-straight defeat.
ALTOONA — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season against Altoona Monday night, falling by the score of 40-16 on the road.
The Lady Chucks (7-2) are 7-0 against non-Altoona teams, as they started the season with a loss to the Lady Mountain Lions before winning seven-straight games. Monday, Punxsy trailed 13-9 in the second quarter before a 25-4 run in Altoona's favor put a Punxsy comeback out of reach.
The Lady Chucks were outscored 13-4 to close the first half before Altoona used a 12-0 third quarter to lead 38-13 entering the fourth.
