PUNXSUTAWNEY â Most Valuable Player Tyler Presloid wasn't the only member of the Chucks to be selected as an Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Boys' Central Division All-Star.
After the Chucks broke the school record for wins in a season and claimed their first-ever postseason victory, Presloid was joined by senior Kody Young and junior Daniel Triponey as Punxsy players recognized by the league.
SOMERSET â After losing by a goal in the District IX Class A Championship Game last Thursday to Northern Potter, the Brookville Raiders had a new attitude when it came to the PIAA state playoffs: Have fun.
The Raiders entered the first round of the state tournament Tuesday in Somerset with a laid back feel, and the notion that playing a loose game with zero pressure would be the best approach. That mindset nearly paid off, as the Raiders kept pace with North Star before surrendering a second-half goal, ending Brookville's season with a 1-0 loss to the Cougars.
HERSHEY â Four members of the Punxsy girls' cross country team competed in Saturday's 2010 PIAA Class AAA Championships, and while not performing poorly by any means, head coach George Wehrle said that the results were somewhat less than expected.
HERSHEY â Up against the best runners in the state in the big school division, Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko and junior Dane Baker came away feeling pretty good about their performances Saturday in Hershey at the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Cross Country Championships.
Meterko, a senior who was competing in his third state meet, finished in 114th place with a time of 17:26 out of 283 runners. Baker, running at states for the second time, followed in 210th place in 18:09.
CLARION â Entering the 2010 Punxsy volleyball season, much was made of the Lady Chucks' talent and experience with 11 seniors returning after 10 of them had been part of the program since they were seventh graders.
But the one thing they may have been lacking was a belief in just how good they were.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The 2010 Punxsy football team accomplished something that hasn't been done in more than three decades at Punxsutawney Area High School: An undefeated regular season.
A year after finishing 9-3 while hosting the District IX Class AAA Championship, and three seasons removed from a winless campaign, the Chucks completed the 2010 regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record.
BROOKVILLE â In what was a bizarre football game from start to finish, the Brookville Raiders did enough to end the regular season with a home victory on Senior Night Friday.
During their 21-14 win over Redbank Valley, the Raiders encountered some good, some bad, and some really ugly situations on the field â situations that made Brookville look anything but the 8-2 team it is.
HERSHEY â Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko will make his third trip, and junior Dane Baker will compete for the second time at the PIAA Class AAA Cross Country Championships at noon today in Hershey.
It's been a while since a member of the Chucks has earned three-straight chances at winning a state title. Meterko finished in 180th place during each of his trips to states in 2008 and 2009. In '09, his time was 18:07, and his 2008 mark was 18:09.
CLARION â When a team is coming off a championship-winning season, many say that the target has been firmly placed on that squad's back.
For the Punxsy volleyball team, one could say that said target has been branded on the Lady Chucks' backs. And that doesn't bother them one bit.
The Lady Chucks, who completed another sterling season by finishing 16-2, accepts the fact that they're the favorites in Saturday's District IX Class AA Championships at Clarion Area High School. With that in mind, they're in search of their sixth-straight district title.
