MARION CENTER — The Punxsy girls' basketball team scored just seven first-half points and turned the ball over 23 times during a 54-23 loss to Marion Center Friday night during the Marion Center Tip-off Tournament.
The Lady Chucks (0-1) return to the court at 2:30 p.m. today when they take on Central Martinsburg in the tournament's consolation game. The championship game — between Marion Center and Westmont Hilltop — will follow at 4:30 p.m.
EMPORIUM — The Punxsy boys' basketball team kept things close every quarter, but could never pull ahead during a 62-45 season-opening loss to Cameron County Friday night in Emporium.
The Chucks (0-1) received more bad news after the loss, as senior forward Darren Pifer may have suffered a concussion after a hard fall with 7:14 left in the third quarter. Pifer's status for Punxsy's next game — Tuesday in Redbank Valley — is uncertain at this time.
Junior Logan Weaver led the Chucks with 21 points, nailing three three-pointers. He added eight rebounds and three assists.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade boys' basketball team started the 2010-2011 season on the right foot, downing North Catholic Friday night at home, 43-32.
The Chucks — which went 10-7 last year as eighth-graders — are led by Brandon Krug this season. Krug, a 2002 PAHS graduate, is coaching junior-high ball for the first time in Punxsy.
"The whole team played together," Krug said. "Our defense and intensity were the difference in the game."
Brandon Mancuso led the Chucks with 18 points. Following Mancuso was Tanner Evans, who managed seven points.
