Game-winning three at buzzer stuns Chucks

December 30, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Marion Center sophomore Brodey Thompson may not have been included on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, but his three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Stingers past the Punxsy boys' basketball team Thursday night in front of a near-capacity crowd in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (3-3) were ahead 49-48 with 9.3 seconds left before Daniel Triponey missed the front end of a one-and-one. As Marion Center's sharp shooting Alex Woodrow, the tournament MVP, raced down court, he was met by one of Punxsy's tallest players — Luke Janocha.

Walk Talk: Here's a few gifts that I enjoyed prior to Christmas

December 28, 2010

Just as days and months pass, so do the four sports seasons in Punxsutawney. As the cold winter of basketball and wrestling brightens with the thought of spring's baseball and softball, cool spring weather becomes even warmer as summer provides even more baseball and softball.

Then, once the days again grow crisper and shorter, football, soccer and volleyball are the main feasts, as the holidays are soon to arrive.

Chucks build huge lead before edging Bisons

December 26, 2010

CLEARFIELD — The Punxsy junior-high wrestling team wasn't happy with the way its match against Clearfield ended, but the Chucks still picked up a huge victory over a squad it has lost to many times.

Behind five wins by fall, Punxsy built a 46-3 advantage, only to squeeze out a 52-44 victory last Wednesday in Clearfield.

"It was great to beat Clearfield finally," Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said. "We're certainly happy about that win, but I was a little disappointed with our finish."

December 26, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy eighth-grade boys' basketball team allowed a combined seven points during the first and fourth quarters while upsetting Altoona White last Wednesday at home, 31-25.

The Chucks (3-1) were ahead 20-13 at halftime before Altoona trimmed the lead to 24-22 entering the final frame. That's when the Chucks pulled away during a 7-3 final frame.

"This was a good team effort defensively," Punxsy head coach Glenn Good said. "There is room for improvement, but overall, it was a good defensive effort. We also rebounded well on both ends of the court."

Bisons too much to handle for Chucks

December 24, 2010

CLEARFIELD — The Punxsutawney varsity wrestling team knew heading into Clearfield Wednesday night that it would be challenged at every weight and would be in for a tough night, and that's exactly what the Chucks got.

The Bisons were too powerful down the lineup, earning a 48-17 victory over the Chucks (1-1), a victory that may seem lopsided, but for Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy, a loss that had plenty of upside.
