Marcia L. (Reid) Etherson, 79, Cranberry Township, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.
She was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Alexander P. and Virginia (Kellert) Reid.
On May 8, 1953, in DuBois, she married Francis T. Etherson.
She lived in St. Marys for more than 30 years and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church of St. Marys; a member of several bridge clubs and a local Quilt Guild; a volunteer knitter for the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Lenard L. McMillen, 70, of Mahaffey, passed away after an extended illness on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 14, 1942, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Norman McMillen and Ruth (Burkett) McMillen.
He married the love of his life, Diane "Kitten" (Painter) McMillen, of Mahaffey, on Aug. 13, 1966.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during Vietnam.
Mr. McMillen worked for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center before retiring.
He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Punxsutawney.
Matthew Edward Brestovich, 34, of Knightstown, Ind., formerly of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.
He was born Feb. 6, 1978, in Indiana, Pa., a son of Larry Edward Brestovich of Rossiter and Cheryl M. (Huey) Brestovich of Ringgold.
Oct. 16, 2004, he married Brittani Danielle Shock.
She survives and resides in Knightstown, Ind.
Matt enjoyed spending time with his children.
His hobbies were hunting and fishing.
Beatrice "Betty" Evelyn (Blose) Mumau was born in Blose Hollow (near Wilgus, Pa.) on July 13, 1917.
She grew up with 11 siblings and regaled friends and family her whole life with magical tales of goings-on and family reunions â€” especially the famous Blose Reunion â€” in the Hollow.
Living to the ripe age of 95, Betty would often wistfully remark, "I am the last leaf on the tree.â€ť
She was married in 1936 to Robert J. Mumau, who preceded her in death in 1984.
John Lee Heckman, 59, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at home.
He was born Dec. 30, 1952, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Albert Charles and Constance Hope (Teats) Heckman.
He had previously worked at Matson Lumber and Elbelâ€™s Produce Farm.
His enjoyment in life was spending time with his daughter Hope, making homemade soup called â€śDough,â€ť having Sunday dinners and visiting his family and friends.
He loved his dog Lizzy.
He was a content man who enjoyed what he had, and he also liked woodworking and gardening.
Mary M. Shields, 92, of Brookville, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville.
She was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Rosehill, Scotland, a daughter of the late Thomas Frew and Elizabeth Reid.
Mrs. Shields was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in Buffalo, N.Y.
She was married on Dec. 12, 1942, to H. Glenn Shields, who preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2001.
Mrs. Shields was a member of the Brookville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. She was active in ministry all her life, leading womenâ€™s groups and mentoring young women.
Donald James Smith, 88, known to his family and friends as Jim Smith, passed away on Oct. 2, 2012, in Carson City, Nev.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Juneau, Pa.
He graduated from Rossiter High School, Class of 1942.
Jim was married to Vivian Dunlop Smith, of Rossiter, for 50 years. She preceded him in death.
Jim served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was retired from Minneapolis Honeywell, Inc. after 35 years.
He was a lifelong member of the Masons.
Alma Smith, 81, of Murray, Utah, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1931, in Creekside, Pa., a daughter of the late Blair Neal and Alta Welder Neal.
She married Ivan Q. Smith, who preceded her in death.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Jennifer (Jim) Brass of Murray, Utah, and Vanda (Bill) Erdos of Bethel Park, Pa.; five grandchildren, Jamie Brass, Katie Beechler, Scott Brass, Abby Brass and Erin Erdos; and a great-grandson, Peyton Beechler.
A memorial service will be held at Circle Hill Cemetery in Punxsutawney at a later date.
Bernard Eugene â€śPokeyâ€ť Smith, 84, guest at the Jefferson Manor, formerly of Brookville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Jefferson Manor surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 7, 1928, the son of the late Percy Parker Smith and Leona Geer Smith, in Grange, Pa.
Feb. 9, 1949, in Punxsutawney, he married Wilma Grace Pearce, who preceded him in death Oct. 13, 1998.
Mr. Smith was a World War II US Army veteran â€”Â Hq. Co. #1 Det. Ft. Jackson, S.C.
He worked as a miner and later retired as a caretaker for Deemers in Brookville.
Robert Henry Rand, 69, Saltsburg, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 24, 1943, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, a son of Floyd and Mary (Dishong) Rand.
Bob was an electrician and longtime employee of Don Huey Construction.
He had also previously worked as a coal miner for Lady Jane Collieries and Tunnelton Mines.
Bob was known as a hard worker who took pride in his work. He was known for his kind, loving and outgoing personality.
Bob was also a very patriotic individual.
