Gladys I. Shaffer, 96, Brookville, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Jefferson Manor.

She was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Knox Dale, a daughter of the late Reed Ellsworth and Emma Francis (Meade) Wolfe.

She was married to Carl V. Shaffer, who preceded her in death Nov. 25, 1997.

Mrs. Shaffer was a homemaker and had previously worked as a nurse at Brookville Hospital and the Pennsylvania Memorial Home in Brookville.

She also worked for the G.C. Murphy Co. in Brookville and the Brookville Glove Factory.

Dr. Frederick L. “Fred” Hoover D.C. Jr., 81

Dr. Frederick L. “Fred” Hoover D.C. Jr., 81, DuBois, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012, at his home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Clearfield, the son of Frederick Logan and Mildred (Walker) Hoover Sr.

Oct. 31, 1953, he married Elizabeth “Betty” (Lash) Hoover, who survives.

Dr. Hoover graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and the Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa.

He was very dedicated to his profession and helped many people at his practice throughout his more than 55 years of service.

Helen M. Keller, 86

Helen M. Keller, 86, Reynoldsville, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at home.

She was born May 17, 1925, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Norman and Kathryn (Knapp) Schuckers.

Oct. 19, 1956, she married Paul E. Keller, who survives.

Mrs. Keller was a 1943 graduate of Reynoldsville High School and a homemaker.

She was a member of the Paradise Community United Church of Christ and its Ladies’ Bible Class and Women’s Service Group.

Donald L. Schuckers, 72

Donald L. Schuckers, 72, Brookville, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at home.

He was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Brookville, a son of the late Lorraine M. and Martha L. (Hinderliter) Schuckers.

Sept. 8, 1964, in Winchester, Va., he married Norma Wolfe, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.

Mr. Schuckers worked as a union carpenter for Hallstrom Construction in DuBois.

He was a member of the Carpenters’ Union Local 947, and the John M. Read Lodge No. 536 F&AM in Reynoldsville.

Robert A. Snyder, 73

Robert A. Snyder, 73, Timblin, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1938, a son of the late Elvin and Agnes (Engle) Snyder Sr.

Mr. Snyder worked at Rola-Jensen as a press operator.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1231 of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Snyder was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed the Pirates and hunting.

Ella D. Whitaker, 99

Ella D. Whitaker, 99, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Josephine (Indiana County), a daughter of the late L. Edward and Bessie (Gorsuch) Doutrich.

In June 1950, she married Dale C. Whitaker, who preceded her in death Aug. 24, 1958.

Mrs. Whitaker was a graduate of Blairsville High School and Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania).

She retired in 1973 from the federal government as a personnel management specialist.

Robert A. Snyder, 73, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

Jack B. Elkin, 88

Jack B. Elkin, 88, Delmont, died Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home.

He was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Trade City.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Mr. Elkin was a member of the Lions and the BPO Elks, and he was a 50-year member of John W. Jenks Lodge No. 534, Free and Accepted Masons.

Ellsworth Carl McCoy, 72

Ellsworth Carl McCoy, 72, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Clarion Hospital.

He was born July 11, 1939, in Marion Center, a son of the late Howard S. and Naomi Kathryn (Jeffries) McCoy.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the medical corps.

Mr. McCoy enjoyed walking, gardening, reading and watching western movies on television. He was charitable to many organizations.

He was a member of the American Legion in Punxsutawney.

James E. Soliday, 66

James E. Soliday, 66, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

He was born Aug. 28, 1945, in DuBois, a son of the late James Edward and Anna Gertrude (Wachob) Soliday.

Aug. 4, 1968, he married Ruth Manners, who survives, of Cloe.

He graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1963 and immediately entered the U.S. Navy as a seaman recruit, retiring as a commander in 1992.

Mr. Soliday served in Vietnam from 1967-68, where he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Combat V.
