Allen Leroy "Roy" Pearce, 82

Allen Leroy "Roy" Pearce, 82, Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Nanty Glo, a son of the late John Henry and Bertha (Wright) Pearce.

He was married to Betty Jane (Peace) Pearce, who preceded him in death Jan. 23, 1989.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Virginia Sandler; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dottie Erckman and Flora Pearce; and a brother, Jack Pearce.

John W. “Bill” “Smokey” McMillen, 75

John W. “Bill” “Smokey” McMillen, 75, formerly of Brookville and Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born Sept. 28, 1936, in Brookville, a son of the late Howard C. and Mary A. (Sarvey) McMillen.

Dec. 14, 1958, in Emrickville, he married Rose Richards, who preceded him in death in 1970.

Mr. McMillen worked as a laborer for Humphrey Charcoal of Brookville, and he was active in the Pine Creek Volunteer Fire Company for 25 years.

Eileen L. North, 83

Eileen L. North, 83, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Andrew and Grace (Lorenzo) Capirosso.

April 3, 1951, she married I. Taylor North, who preceded her in death July 4, 1992.

Mrs. North was a lifelong resident of Punxsutawney and a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church. She attended SS.C.D. school and graduated from there in 1946. She was involved in activities within the church and the school throughout her life.

Barbara Helen (Dubensky) Rosman, 75

Barbara Helen (Dubensky) Rosman, 75, Sykesville, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Adrian, a daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Kvashnock) Dubensky.

Aug. 30, 1958, in Sykesville, she married Joseph Myron Rosman, who survives.

Mrs. Rosman was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School and a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in DuBois.

She worked at Cameron in Reynoldsville and was also a seamstress at Ideal Products in Sykesville.

She enjoyed playing cards, sewing and travel.

Anna Kathryn Blayer, 84, Tecumseh, Mich., formerly of Ann Arbor, Mich., passed away Monday, May 7, 2012, surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Adrian, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Brudnock) Midock.

May 7, 1955, in Punxsutawney, she married John Richard Blayer, who preceded her in death after 47 years of marriage.

In 1955, the couple moved to Ann Arbor, where Mr. and Mrs. Blayer began their family.

Shawna M. Marshall, 52

Shawna M. Marshall, 52, Mahaffey, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at her home.

Miss Marshall was born Sept. 4, 1959, in Dodge City, Kan., a daughter of Betty Clover and step-father Phil Clover, who survive, and the late Harold Marshall.

She was a graduate of Calvary Christian Bible School.

Diane Lee Trithart, 64

Diane Lee Trithart, 64, passed away Friday, May 4, 2012, at her home near Custer, S.D.

After growing up in Punxsutawney, Ms. Trithart attended Grove City College, where she met the man she would marry, Ron.

Over the course of her life, Ms. Trithart had three separate careers: First, as a mother raising a child; second, as a businesswoman with Consumer Credit Counseling Service, in which she rose to the level of CEO; and finally, as a small business owner, where she ran her own bed and breakfast.

John Andrew “Simon” Meterko, 77

John Andrew “Simon” Meterko, 77, Delancey, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1934, in Delancey, a son of the late John Andrew and Susie (Pluchinskey) Meterko.

In August 1962, he married the former Adda Louise Biggie, who survives.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church.

A man of strong faith, with a dedication to his daily prayers, he prayed for many people and causes.

Mr. Meterko was a self-employed carpet installer and a hardworking man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family.

Captain Philip Furst Carothers Jr., USN, 81

May 4, 2012

Captain Philip Furst Carothers Jr., USN, 81, a career Naval Officer with 30 years of active service, died Nov. 10, 2011, at Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, Wash.

He was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Somerset, a son of Philip Furst and Ruth (Goodwin) Carothers.

Captain Carothers' family moved to Cedar Springs, Lamar Township, in 1938, where he attended the local schools and graduated from Lock Haven High School, where he was named "Top Scholar" and awarded Clinton County's State Scholarship in 1948.

Ruth L. (Martz) Pierce, 93

Ruth L. (Martz) Pierce, 93, Brookville, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 4, 2012, at Laurelbrooke Assisted Living in Brookville.

She was born May 16, 1918, a daughter of the late W.E. and Alice Martz.

May 16, 1940, she married David M. Pierce, who preceded her in death April 5, 1999.

Mrs. Pierce was employed by the Brookville Sylvania plant for many years and was the bookkeeper for the Gateway Bowling Alley for a number of years.
